"Are you sure you don't mind keeping her with you?" Astrid asked as she adjusted her newborn son in her arms.
"I'm positive," Hiccup assured her. "You know she's good at staying quiet during meetings. Besides, she needs to get outside for a little while." Astrid nodded. It had been two weeks since Nuffink was born and poor Zephyr had been cooped up inside which meant she was starting to get fidgety.
"Okay, but bring her back so she can take a nap," Astrid consented and gestured for Zephyr to come over to her. "You be a good girl okay?"
"Yes mommy," Zephyr said with a wide smile. "Bye bye Nuffink." She reached up and kissed her brother's tiny head, making her parents hearts melt.
"We'll be back soon," Hiccup said and had to quickly run downstairs because Zephyr was already out the door. "Whoa slow down, let me catch up." She stopped running still and waited, rather impatiently, for him to catch up to her. She grabbed his hand and followed him into the Great Hall.
"Well look who's here!" Gobber said with a smile. "Have you been watching your brother?"
"Yes!" Zephyr replied eagerly. "He sleeps a lot though." This made both men laugh.
"Come on Zeph, let's go sit down." He put her on the chair Astrid usually sat in and gave her some paper to draw on while he held the meeting. Anytime Zephyr sat in a meeting with her parents everyone was stunned by how well behaved she was. She never interrupted or even really made a sound at all. And it never failed, at least one person would ask how she was so well behaved. After two meetings she was starting to get fidgety, but only Hiccup actually noticed the difference. He wrapped up the meeting quickly and took Zephyr outside to get out some energy.
"I want to go see baby brother! I'll show him my pictures!" She said excitedly as she ran around behind the great hall.
"We'll go home in a little bit, but you have way too much energy right now," Hiccup replied and tried to keep up with her. Keeping up with a three year old was hard enough, but when combined with the small amount of sleep you get with a newborn, it was ten times harder.
"Do you think Nuffink missed me?" She asked and jumped into her father's arms.
"Oh I think he did. Though I think I know someone else who missed you more."
"Mommy!"
"She's going to be so proud of how good you were this morning." Zephyr smiled widely before a little yawn escaped. "Uh oh, I think someone needs a nap." She shook her head aggressively but yawned again. "How about we go check on Mommy and Nuffink?" She nodded, apparently thinking that the nap idea was no longer in consideration. Of course she was wrong, but that meant Hiccup's plan had worked. She would gladly go home to see her brother, but not for a nap.
They walked toward the house, but of course they were stopped several times by people asking about Astrid, the baby, or just to see Zephyr. After what felt like forever, they finally made it home.
"There's my big girl," Astrid said when Zephyr ran over and hugged her. "Did you and Daddy have fun?"
"Yeah! Where's Nuffink?" She replied excitedly.
"He's upstairs sleeping which is where you're going," Astrid replied earning a frown from her daughter.
"You can see him when you wake up," Hiccup chimed in. She reluctantly nodded and allowed him to take her upstairs. Despite how much she had been opposed to a nap, she was asleep within minutes.
"How'd she do?" Astrid asked once he was back downstairs.
"She did great," he replied proudly. "She didn't say a word, just sat beside me and colored." She smiled and leaned against his shoulder. "Looks like you could use a nap too."
"Moms don't get naps," she chuckled sleepily.
"They do when dads are home to keep an eye on the kids when they wake up."
"Hmm, but I'd rather stay here with you. It's not often we get to have time for just the two of us anymore." The only part of the day when it was just the two of them was right after the kids went to bed and by then they were both too exhausted to really spend time together.
"You need sleep though." She just ignored him and snuggled closer. He hated seeing her so exhausted. "Will you get some sleep if I go with you?"
"But Nuffink will need-"
"I'll get up when he starts to cry. Astrid you're exhausted, and it won't do the kids any good if you get sick from lack of sleep." Once he brought up the kids he knew he had won. Ten years ago, no one ever would have guessed how gentle and caring she would become as a mother, but here she was and he couldn't be more proud of her.
"Okay, but only if you stay with me," she finally conceded.
"Let's see, would I rather stay here with my wife or go deal with a bunch of grumpy old men. Hmmm, tough choice," Hiccup teased. Astrid just rolled her eyes and dragged him upstairs.
"All these years and still the same dork," she said, climbing in bed and wrapping the blankets around her.
"At least I'm consistent," he replied as he attempted to pry some of the blankets from her. She rolled over and snuggled into his chest, but still didn't relinquish any of the blankets. "Four years of marriage and you still don't share blankets." She gave him the smallest corner and pulled the rest up around her neck. "Oh, so generous," he said sarcastically.
"Just be glad you get anything at all. Now if Zephyr was here I'd give them to her."
"Dumped for my own daughter," he said acting hurt.
"You'd do it too and don't even pretend you wouldn't," Astrid accused. "You spoil her so much and you know it." He just shrugged, not confirming or denying what she was saying. But everyone on New Berk knew it was true so there really was no debate anyway.

I love writing hiccstrid as parents.  I wish we could have seen more of it, especially when their kids were younger, but I'll take what I can get😄
