(Loosely based on the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie but Viking style)
"You'll Wait for me?"
"Always."

She had become used to the constant questions, the constant reminders of all she had lost. 'When will you marry?' 'You know the people need an heir.' 'I heard that several young men are asking for your hand, maybe you should accept one of them.' The same question just in different phrases. The same lie every time.
"I'm perfectly content in my abilities to lead alone, but if that changes I'm sure you'll be the first to tell me," Astrid replied icily. "Now if you'll excuse me, I've had a long day and I need rest." She walked out of the room leaving yet another confused Viking behind her. She quickly walked to her hut and into the sanctuary of her bedroom.
"Another suggestion of marriage I take it?" Came the voice of her best friend. When Astrid had to take up the role of Chieftess, Heather and her husband quickly decided to move to New Berk for a little while to help out. Since the Chief's, or rather Chieftess's house was always the largest, they were able to move into one of several extra rooms, and Astrid was extremely grateful for all the help they were able to offer.
"Among other things," Astrid replied with a half smile. "I hope it's not too much to hope for a warm bath."
"Ready and waiting," Heather said with a smile. "I figured you might need it, and I had extra time after I got Isaac to sleep." Astrid smiled gratefully and climbed in, letting the warm water soothe her tired body.
"Anything else I can do to help?"
"No, thank you for everything Heather. Go find your husband, I'm sure he misses you."
"I won't argue," Heather said and headed back to her house. She thought she was leaving Astrid alone, but she was wrong.
"I guess it's just us now," Astrid whispered rubbing her stomach. She hadn't revealed her pregnancy to anyone and the only other person that knew was the healer who confirmed it. It wouldn't be much longer until she couldn't hide it anymore. Her stomach seemed to be growing everyday.
"I wish you could have both of us, but I'll have to do for awhile." She missed her husband more than she could put into words, but at least for now she knew he was still alive. Her marriage was another thing she would have to reveal soon.
After another few minutes in the bath, she got out and put on her most comfortable and lose fitting nightgown. Keeping her marriage and pregnancy from Heather had been the hardest thing so far as she was very observant and it didn't help that she was also her best friend. It was time for her to know.
The next morning she woke up early not only due to morning sickness but also to give her time to figure out how to tell Heather about the baby.
"Well someone's up early?" Heather said when she came into the room.
"Yeah, um I need to tell you something," Astrid said trying her best not to scare her. "You might want to sit down." Heather looked at her skeptically but sat down anyway. "So I haven't been completely honest with you lately and I think you deserve the truth. You're my best friend after all, and I'm really going to need you in a few months."
"Astrid, you're kinda scaring me. What's going on?"
"I'm pregnant." Heather's jaw dropped. Of all the things she could have thought of, this was the last thing she expected.
"You're WHAT?! Why didn't you tell me?!"
"I didn't know until last month-"
"You found out last month?! How far along are you?!"
"Three months." She tightened her nightgown to show off the small bump that was slowly but surely developing.
"Oh my Thor, are you okay? Are you having any morning sickness?"
"Oh yeah," Astrid laughed. "Whoever this little person is, they really like waking me up early." The two women were quiet for a few moments before Heather asked the question they both knew was coming.
"Where is the father? Is it-"
"That's a long story," Astrid interrupted.
"Well I'll give you time to come up with a good answer while I go feed Isaac. No rush." Once she was alone again, Astrid tried to figure out the best and simplest way to explain a complicated situation. She went to get some food and finished just in time for Heather to walk back in holding Isaac against her shoulder.
"Someone didn't want to go to sleep," she explained.
"Well he gets to hear too, after all we are talking about his future best friend," Astrid said and smiled at the newborn. They sat on the couch watching Isaac for a few minutes before Astrid finally answered the question Heather had tried to ask earlier.
"First of all, yes, it's Hiccup."
"Then why isn't he here? How could he just ditch you when you're pregnant with his child?!" Since Isaac's birth, Heather's protective mother instincts were triggered by just about anything.
"He didn't know about the baby," Astrid explained quickly. "Neither did I actually. In fact all of this started when he first met Toothless. The dragons come from the hidden world, but what we didn't know was that they have human guardians. When he had nothing else keeping him on Berk, Hiccup was chosen by the oldest living guardian to someday become a dragon guardian himself when he was old enough. Jump forward to earlier this year and it turned out that old enough meant more than one thing. Age wise he had been ready for three years, but he still had to find confidence in himself, enough to let go. He never knew what was meant by being a dragon guardian, so he just tried to protect the dragons as much as he could." Astrid took a shaky breath, before getting to the hardest part. "It turns out it meant going with the dragons to the hidden world and staying for seven years." Heather gasped and tears were filling her eyes. Isaac seemed to notice his mother's sadness and started crying loudly. She gently bounced him until he started falling asleep again.
"So that's why you're the Chieftess now," Heather said finally understanding.
"Sort of," Astrid said uncertainly.
"There's more?!"
"Oh yeah. One of the guardians came to see Hiccup the evening the dragons left and explained what he was supposed to do. He tried to get out of it, but a promise is a promise and he's never broken a promise before." Heather nodded knowing exactly what she meant. Hiccup was loyal to a fault. "He asked for one day and it was granted since he was told so suddenly. The minute the guardian left he came to find me.......

"Y-you're leaving? After everything you've fought for and built?" Astrid asked, trying to hide how much she was shaking.
"I don't want to Astrid, but I promised," Hiccup said apologetically.
"That was six years ago! You've changed since then! You're the chief, your people need you!" He reached out tentatively and grabbed her hands.
"I promise I'll come back." His words stopped her breathing for a moment. A promise. That's why he was leaving, and he was now promising to come back to Berk. To her. She hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shoulder.
"I don't want you to go," she said softly as tears seeped into his shirt. "Can I go with you?"
"I wish you could, but you can't. Besides, you deserve a better life than that."
"I don't want a life without you in it," she said firmly and looked up at him. "If something happens to you, or to me while you're gone I want to know that, even if only briefly, I was truly yours." He stared at her in shock. He was leaving for seven years and she still wanted to be with him.
"Seven years, Astrid. What kind of man would I be if I married you and then left you for seven years," Hiccup said angrily, though she could tell he would eventually give in.
"I know and I don't care. I love you no matter where you are or if we're together or not. And if I am going to be waiting for seven years, I'd rather be waiting as your wife."

"So you're telling me that you got married and never told me?!" Heather exclaimed, though she was smiling at the same time.
"The only other people who know are Gothi, Valka, and Gobber because they were there," Astrid explained.
"Okay let me get this straight. You got married because Hiccup had to go to the hidden world to be one of the guardians for the next seven years. You're pregnant, Hiccup has no idea, and he won't know until your child is six years old." Astrid shrugged but nodded. "I know this is probably a stupid question but how are you doing with all of this?"
"As good as I can be given the situation. I mean I went from being a dragon rider and General of Berk to being Chieftess, pregnant, and losing my dragon and my husband all at the same time." She took a deep breath before continuing. "But despite all of the stress, when I found out I was pregnant it made all simultaneously easier and harder. It's like he's still here. Though keeping it a secret has definitely been hard, especially with morning sickness."
"Girl, I have no clue how you've been doing it," Heather said, sounding rather impressed. "When I was pregnant I could barely get out of bed some days because I was so sick." Astrid laughed a little, remembering all too well what she went through.
"I've definitely had those days, but they're starting to become less frequent." She looked down at her stomach sadly. "Hiccup will be heartbroken that he missed all of this. He won't even get to meet his child until long after the tiny baby years." Heather reached over and grabbed her hand reassuringly.
"I know this is hard, but you've got this. I know Valka, your parents, the gang, Gobber, and of course Evan and I will all be here for you." Astrid smiled gratefully. She couldn't imagine not having them to help her. Maybe, she really could do this after all.Wow that was way longer than I expected it to be😂 I recently rewatched the pirates movies and of course my brain was like, hmm let's make this hiccstrid😂 Since I didn't post a one shot last weekend then I'll be posting an extra one shot tomorrow.
