As I Am (Part 2 of There You'll Be)

Bedside Manner

The plane landed at 8:30 am Indiana time.

I quickly got an Uber. I sat in the back, chewed my nails and played with my wedding ring. My legs bounced quickly with the anxiety.

We arrived at the front door of the hospital. I grabbed my bag and ran to the front desk.

"Bagans, Zak. I'm his wife." I said breathlessly and tear stained.

"Room 1367, Mam."

I took off for the elevator. The lift didn't move quick enough.

I got off on the ICU floor and Aaron waited for me at the door. As soon as the doors opened I crashed into a hug.

"Where is he?" I asked.

Aaron pointed to the door.

"Billy is in there now." He said.

I walked in the room and saw my sweet mans face. He still wasn't awake but he was breathing. I fell to my knees at his bedside.

"Oh my God. Zak? Zak, can you hear me baby? Z? Oh my god. Wake up honey. Come on."

"I'll leave you with him." Billy said as he left.

"Zak, come on. Please. Please wake up. You can't leave me alone. You can't leave our kids. We are suppose to make more babies. What about your mom? The museum? Gracie?"

I grabbed his hand and kissed it. It was still lukewarm.

"Wake up Zak! Please! Wake up! Wake the fuck up! God damn it! Wake up, wake up, wake up!" I screamed at him as I shook him.

I collapsed over the top of him and screamed while sobbing.

The boys ran into the room and unwound me from him. They pulled me into a big group hug.

"He can't go! He can't leave us!" I kept repeating. The guys all held me close and rubbed my back.

"Ev, why don't you get in bed with him?" Jay suggested.

I crawled up in the hospital bed and rested my head on Zak's chest. I silently pleaded and cried.

I could hear his heartbeat. It was very faint but it was there. I kissed his cheek once, twice, three times.

Oh my god Zak. Please just wake up.

I nestled into him. His scent was unfamiliar. His skin was a grey blue color and he didn't look like my tough guy.

"Mrs Bagans?" A doctor said as he entered the room.

"Yes? That's me."

"We have some good news. Your husband was sent into shock which ultimately threw him into a coma. Think Hermione from Harry Potter when she was stunned. There should be no lasting effects on him because of this and he should be waking up soon."

"Thank you, Doctor." I said as he walked out.

I turned to Zak. "Hear that? You will wake up soon & then I'll get to take you home. You'll get to be with the kids and I again."

"Hey Ev, we are headed back to the site to get it all done with so we will get to leave when you do." Jay poked his head in. I shook my head.

I fell asleep on the recliner next to his bed. I was exhausted and didn't want to crowd him while he was out.

At one point, I got up to use the restroom. While I was in there. I heard some rustling, moans and stirring.

"Mmm...Aaron? Jay? Billy? Hello? What am I doing here?"

I peer out the bathroom door.

"Z?"

"Ev? What are you doing here? Why am I not at work?"

I walk over to his bed and hug his neck.

"Baby you were attacked. You've been in a coma for a little over 12 hours. The entity put you into shock."

"What? Are you kidding me? Where are the guys?"
He questioned.

"They returned to the grounds to finish the filming and investigation so we can all go home later today. You won't need to stay here for 2 weeks like you'd scheduled."

It took Zak a second before connecting the dots.

"Let me call the guys and figure out the soonest possible time to get home." I said.
