"Let go of me!" I demand, raising my voice.

"No baby, please stay here with Mommy!" My mother cries out, gripping my wrist tighter.

"I need to go to work mom. Otherwise, I'll get fired!" My face is stern, my voice strong.

"You should just quit so we can be together all day and I can protect you." She pleads, tears falling from her eyes.

"No, I will not quit. God knows we need the money coming in. You can't just live off of dad's checks." I grab her hand in mine and rip her fingers off. There are pink marks on my hand from hers, a giant red hand-formed into my wrist.

"Please don't leave." She crumples into the floor and I turn away. I couldn't look at her if I did. I might feel bad. But she has caused me so much pain, I don't want to feel bad for her.

"I'll be back when work is over." With that, I leave to go to my safe place. I would never tell mother about where I really go on my day off. She thinks I work a seven day week. If she knew I was out on a hike, she would have followed me. But she doesn't follow me to work. I've threatened her enough to keep that from happening.
