The Scientists - Coldplay
Camila's POV
September 2017Shawn texted me again this morning. He said there was a get together at a friend's house tonight and he wanted me to go with him. It was lowkey, he said. I hadn't been out much lately, too busy with my music to party or socialize unless it was work related. My first instict was to say no, I much rather stay home and watch movies with a bowl of ice cream than mingle around people I didn't know and make small talk with them. Then I thought that maybe it could actually be a good idea, I wasn't going to be completely alone after all, he was going to be with me. Plus, he insisted until he convinced me.
Here I was now, getting out of the car and walking towards the door with Shawn right beside me. He had a floral shirt with short sleeves on and his arms looked amazing.
"Ready?", he asked me with a smile and I nodded.
A tall blonde guy came to open the door and he and Shawn hugged. We went inside after some introductions and shortly after I had a beer in my hand. It was true that it wasn't a big party but more of a lowkey get together. I didn't know most of the people but there were some familiar faces around.
Shawn looked just in his element chatting with everyone and playing drinking games. There was a girl closed to him while he played beer pong and she did not hesitate to cheer for him every time, even when Shawn pretty much sucked at the game. I watched him play a few feet apart, from the sofa, while chatting with a guy I had seen before at some events. He was nice and interesting, but my eyes inevitably traveled to where Shawn was. He managed to shot the ball inside a glass and the girl next to him grabbed his arm excitedly, he smiled at her but his smile quickly died when he looked back at me and saw me staring. I felt so dumb about it. What were we doing? We were just friends and owed each other no explanations.
The person that was talking to me excuse himself to go get another drink and before I knew, Shawn was taking his place on the sofa.
"Are you having a good time?", he asked me.
"Yeah", I replied. I was, truly, I was just mixing that with a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach.
"We can leave whenever you want", he told me.
"It's ok, I'm good".
"Do you want to play?", he said pointing at the beer pong game.
"I'm not really good", I chuckled.
"Who cares? C'mon, be my partner".
He took my hand and dragged me to the end of the table and announced to everyone we were playing. Another couple stood on the other side and we began throwing the ping pong ball back and forth. To my suprise, I was good at this, or at least better than Shawn. Few drinks, a lot of laughter and failed shots later we were done with the game and he told me to go outside for fresh air.
"That was fun", I said still excited about it.
"You are pretty good", he said surprised.
"I saved your ass".
"You did"; he agreed and then run his finger through his hair. "I know I've said this a lot but I really missed you".
"I missed you too, Shawn".
"I wish I had been with you when things got rough".
"You were, not in person but you were".
We sat by the pool and stared at the city lights in the distance. I was clueless about what we were doing, what I wanted to do. It felt like I had got my friend back but this time it wasn't enough. Our schedules and careers were even crazier than before, but looking at him I couldn't help but remember the kiss we shared time ago. Would it feel too different to do that now?
