Chapter 31: The Talk

Doctor Oobleck and I went out to patrol the area around our camp. I was going to have a word with him about he put my team down and my girlfriend and her team down as well. I felt like what he said to them was not earned and not called for. I had a feeling he knew I was going to say something. We stop at an area and right as I'm about to say something a large grimm appears. I form my sword ready to kill it when Oobleck pushed my sword down.

"Don't worry about that goliath" Oobleck says "why's that isn't it just another grimm?" I asked. "You would be surprised young Rose, not all grimm lack a mind, these ones know how futile it is to attack humans" Oobleck answered. "I'm sure you can sense the other grimm waiting for the opportune moment to strike" Oobleck said. "I can sense their soulless bodies up there on the mountains looking down on us" I reply.

With that Oobleck and I headed back to the camp. Neither of us said anything while we walked back until Oobleck spoke up. "I am sure you want to ask me why I said those things to your teammates?" he asked. "You would be right, I do want to know why you said those things to all of them" I answered. Oobleck sighs "your team's answers were perfect and right on the money for what a hunter should be" he said.

"If they were perfect then why did you tell them those things?" I asked. "That's it those are the answers every young hunter or huntress in training gives when asked why they wanted to be a hunter or huntress" Oobleck answers. "They either don't want people to suffer they same way they did, their parents raised them right and instilled good morels in them and then there are those who've been wronged and swear they will never be wronged again" Oobleck explains

It didn't take me long to realise that what Oobleck said was the exact same thing my team said. "Look you and your team will become excellent hunters in the future but first they must figure out the real reason why they want to be hunters" Oobleck said to me. "What about my sister and her team then?" I asked. "They also don't know why as well, your older sister doesn't want to be weak what a terrible excuse, the Schnee thinks she owes her family something and your girlfriend has a blurred sense of justice" Oobleck answered.

"Yeah I know Yang wants to be strong especially after all that happened, she may not say it or act like it but I have a feeling I know what Tai did to her, then there's Weiss yeah she can be stuck up but after hanging out with us and getting close to Rider she's started to come out of her shell and Blake yeah Blake sometimes her sense of justice pushes her to do some pretty stupid stuff" I said. "Also did you know she's my girlfriend?" I asked.

"Y/N, Ozpin asked us teachers to keep an eye on you because he was worried that you'd be a lose cannon" Oobleck answers. "I am not a lose cannon" I said irritated "I see that and I know that you are one of the school's best students, Ozpin was just worried you wouldn't be able to handle certain situations" Oobleck replied. After that conversation we continued to walk back to the camp.

"You know, you never asked Ruby or I why we wanted to be hunters and huntresses" I said speaking up. "No I didn't" Oobleck replies "why is that?" I asked. "Both of you are young and have experienced the worst of humanity you got a double dose of it, the reason why you two want to be hunters and huntresses doesn't need to be said" Oobleck answers.

That left me thinking and wondering about my life and everything that has happened in it. "Why did you want to be a hunter?" I asked Oobleck. "You see Y/N, knowledge is my weapon, I can do the most by passing that knowledge onto the future generations, that I'm sure will be a lot like you in more ways than one, there is nothing that I would rather be" Oobleck answers.

Back at the camp we find both team RWBY and team CYBR looming over the fire with their morale kind of low after what Oobleck said to them. "Man this sucks everything I was ever told dismissed like it was nothing" Benny says with a sigh. "Your telling me everything I did was for the honor of my family and now I'm told it means nothing" Weiss replies. "Sucks to be you two, I never wanted people to be in the same situation I was because they are different, now I'm told that isn't why I want to be a hunter" Chris says.

"Same, after seeing how faunus were treated for years then how the white fang made us look even more bad, I just wanted to stop all of the wrongs in this world" Blake replies to Chris. "Easy for you to say, I've been weak all my life and when I got the strength I needed I made it my goal to show I was strong now I fell like it was all wasted effort" Yang says. "Your one to talk you blonde barbaric brute, you deserve no sympathy from any of us" Rider tells Yang.

"Take that back you no eyed freak" Yang says lunging at Rider who pointed his bow at her head with an arrow ready. "Y/N hasn't said he's forgiven you yet until then do something and I will kill you" Rider tells Yang. "Enough you guys!!!" Ruby yells getting everyone's attention. Zwei barks and walks up to Ruby rubbing himself on her leg. "Think about what doctor Oobleck told you and think really hard" Ruby told them.

Everyone grew silent and began to think like Ruby told them to do. "You see it those answers were wrong" Ruby tells them. "They weren't us" Blake says "no they really weren't" Weiss says "I guess we truly don't know why we want to be huntresses" Yang says. Ruby then turns to the guys "what about you?" she asks them.

"I only ever wanted to be a hunter because my grandparents told me it was the right thing to do" Benny says. "I always thought I could help people and make sure they don't suffer if I became a hunter" Chris says. "My reason was never a reason at all, I just didn't want to get stabbed in the back again" Rider says. "Don't you three see it now?" Ruby asks them. The three guys look at themselves before looking back at Ruby.

"It wasn't why I wanted to be a hunter it was what my grandparents said I should I be" Benny answers. "Anyone can help people and make sure they aren't bullied, but it isn't why I should be a hunter" Chris answers. "Protecting yourself from being betrayed isn't what a hunter does, hell I don't even truly know why I wanted to become a hunter" Rider says.

"That's why doctor Oobleck said those things to you" Ruby tells them all. It started to make some sort of sense now. They would all need to find out why they truly wanted to be hunters. "Hey, Oobleck never asked you or Y/N" Chris says. "Yeah, why was that?" Weiss asks "who's going to be the one to ask him?" Yang asks. They all look at each other "yeah let's not" Blake says "I don't want another tongue lashing and another reason to think about my life choices" Chris says.

Time Skip

By the time Oobleck and I had gotten back to the camp I could tell that my teammates and everyone else had an attitude change. I guess they must of talked to each other or sorted their problems out on their own. It was good to see especially after everything they went through. "So who will be volunteering to be taking the first watch?" Oobleck asks us.

"I will" I answer raising my hand first "alright then" Oobleck says. I go over to my spot and sit down. Zwei comes over to me and licks my face. "It's good to see you as well buddy" I tell him. Zwei barks then burrows himself into my arm. I look out over the ruins of the abandoned city. I had a lot to think about right now and sleep wasn't it. A lot of what Oobleck said actually made some sense, but I did wonder about why I wanted to be a hunter.

I could hear the howl of a beowolf far out in the darkness. Zwei wakes up and licks my metallic hand. "Don't worry buddy tomorrow will be a lot better" I tell him. Zwein yawns then goes back to sleep.

A/N: Alright readers there will be plenty of action in the next chapter. This chapter I wanted to humanize everyone and have them think about themselves and their decisions.
