We've been together for too long

I've always been a morning person, still am, very much so now I'd say, having to wake up Sara and Alex every morning to take them to school. Stevie on the other hand isn't. I lie with my eyes wide open, waiting for her to wake up, but she doesn't. I get out of bed and she doesn't even stir. I go to stand by the window, with the curtains pulled apart, stark naked. I've always been confident about my looks, what else can I say.

“Well, hot damn!” I hear a couple of minutes later and start laughing.

“I woke you up?”

“Not sure to be honest.” She rolls onto her back and stretches. “I wish I had that level of confidence.”

“You should, you’re just as exceptionally beautiful as far back as I remember.” I get back in bed and we lie together.

“Why do you always have an urge to wake up so early? Just look how comfortable this bed is, Linds, white cotton sheets and all…”

“You know I’ve always been this way. I could ask the same, why are you always up when other people are having their lunch break?”

“Cotton sheets and all, Lindsey.”

A comfortable silence surrounds us, then I press my lips to her forehead. “Last night was incredible.”

“Yeah. I missed you taking me against the wall." Her straight forward way of speaking sometimes shocks me. "Nobody ever really came close to you.”

“Is that so? Or are you just flattering me?”

“I mean it, you asshole.”

“You’re taking a new approach with sweet nothings, Stevie.”

“I boost your ego, but you still need to be reassured I have actually done that!”

“My ego is pretty big.”

“I know.”

“I mean it.” I wink and she covers her face with the bed sheet.

“Oh my god, Lindsey…” I burst out laughing. She changes her position again, lying on her stomach now, and looking up at him. “You seem happy.”

I nod. “Thanks to you, angel.” I take her hand and bring it to my lips. “I would have never been if not you, you know… If I was with someone else, I would still love you, belong to you. I got it bad, Stevie… you got your claws in me deep. Or maybe you are in fact a witch and…”

“Don’t you fucking go there, Buckingham.” She jabs a finger in my chest. “I will never live the witch thing down, am I?”

“Nope. Unless you changed completely, ditched the black and your stage moves and all, but who would want to see just another female vocalist?”

“So, now I’m special?”

“Of course you are, Stevie, always been.”

I clasp our hands together and she lies her head on me. “I love you.”

“I will never get tired of hearing that.”

“Is that a promise?”

“You know it. Why are you asking that? Are you worried again?”

“I'm always worried. We’re so tight and perfect when it’s just the two of us, but when other people come in, this all goes away. This morning is so precious to me and I fear that once I leave for the day, this will stop, that there will always be something for us to argue about.”

“Yeah, but that's us, isn't it? I told you time and time again, we’re in it for the long run, baby, no matter what.”

“I want to believe you…”
