My eyes go between my father's bloody hand and Kayn's numb face.
"I've told you! I can't remember. Let him go, I'll do anything. I promise." I blurt out while sobbing. Trying to drag away my hands from the chains without any success. My body starts to tremble uncontrollably.
"You say that but nothing is happening." Kayn lifts the scalpel to my father's face and presses it against his skin. Slowly the blood peeks forward as the blade makes it's way down.
"Don't say anything, Gianna." My father muffles while stiffening a cry. I watch his red shot eyes with horror. Biting my lower lip trying to calm myself down.
"Why don't I share a story?" Kayn looks up at me smiling, I eagerly nod with my eyes wide open.
"Yeah, sure, anything," I reassure with a cracked voice even though I'm trying so hard to stay strong. I nod slowly, locking eyes with my father. He doesn't give away any form of rejection, we need to play along.
"I know you humans do this as some sort of bonding exercise. You share they share." Kayn laughs for himself as he's starting to pace around the room. The scalpel is twirling between his fingers.
"I wasn't always like this you know? A careless executor, I was brought up this way! How am I suppose to tell right from wrong?" He shakes his head. His voice is loud but clear.
I'm having trouble feeling sorry for him after everything but I have to make him believe I do. Have to win him over, if that's possible, considering the pill.
Kayn stops behind my father and I hold my breath, he's raising the blade towards his neck. A playful smile is forming on his lips as he's seeing my expression.
"You coming around and telling me how bad I am didn't make things better. Oh Kayn why do you murder people? Oh, don't you guys value life on Andromeda? Oh no." He rolls his eyes and takes a step back from my father. I exhale with relief.
"My parents told me one story about right and wrong." His voice is filled with rage and frustration. "But they were renegades!"
I give my father a quick glance wondering if he understands, his eyes are glued to Kayn.
"I was trained to do this. Trained to follow orders, they thought me. The rulers."
"They killed your parents, why do you keep listening to them?" I'm not sure it's a good idea to speak up but I'm not following his story. I don't get how he could work for them after they killed his parents.
"I saw the consequences, you foolish girl." Kayn walks over to my side. He starts to pace back and forth behind me. All my body hair stands on end.
I keep my eyes glued to my shaking hands. Not wanting to lose my sanity. I just have to picture everything being fine, that's how we get out of this. I'll play along. Pretend he's just a damaged soul.
"We were walking down the street of our, neighborhood, let's call it that. My mother was babbling about the future as always. The future without the rulers." He pauses. "As if there was a world where they didn't exist."
I cast my head over my shoulder to see him leaning, head first, against the wall. Kayn looks like he's in pain. Flushed cheeks a tensed jaw. Closed eyes. His chest is rising and falling fast.
He inhales then continues. "I never understood why she disliked them so terribly. I always envied the rulers. We all did. They had everything, beautiful houses, food, games, technology, everything one could want in life."
I'm starting to believe he's not on the pill. Or the pill might not be as powerful as he's claimed it to be. What I see, is pure human emotions.
I'm trying so hard to understand him, I have since the first time we met.
