Ch. 9 Training With Todoroki

Todoroki was already in the gym when I got there. We were meeting in the strength training section, which felt appropriate. At the moment, we were the only ones there. I ran up to him excitedly, but he only stood there. Was he bored or completely apathetic? Hard to tell.

Once I got to him, we stood for a moment face to face, both of us unsure what to do.

I reached out and put my hand on his shoulder. "Todoroki, thanks for agreeing to help me. I'm not sure what we're going to do, but anything I can learn is more than what I know right now."

He nodded.

Could this get more awkward?

He had promised to help me with my quirk, the quirk that no one else even knew I had. I also hoped to find out some useful information while I was there. For that, I needed him to loosen up.

We were still just standing there staring at each other.

"Oh.. and Todoroki?" I asked.

"You can call me Shoto."

"Okay, well, Shoto... you're really hot," I said.

"Uh... thanks?" I said, looking at me quizzically.

"No, for real, your arm feels like it's on fire."

"Oh. OH," he said, realizing that he had activated his quirk on his fire side. "Sorry."

"No worries," I chuckled. "So how do you want to do this? Want to sit and talk it through?"

"Sure," he said, and we both sat on the floor of the gym. "Before we can do anything, first tell me what you know about your quirk," he said. Then he added, "I mean.. if you don't mind, of course."

"So..." I started. I always hesitated to tell anyone about my quirk. First, I didn't even really know what it was or how to use it, and second, because I didn't want to be turned into a lab rat by people who might want to know more about it. For some reason, even though I knew better than anyone not to trust people, I felt like I could trust Shoto.

"I know that I heal quickly," I began. "I don't bruise, and cuts typically only last a few seconds. I've never broken a bone, even though there have been times where I probably should have. I've never purposefully hurt myself to try to test anything out though, and it's not something I do on command or at will. Sometimes it happens quickly and other times not at all. I haven't figured out how to turn it on or off, especially since I don't even know what 'it' is, really."

He looked thoughtful. "We need to just start small and test things out to see what happens."

"And you can use both fire and ice? Like a double quirk?"

His eyes looked sad. "Something like that."

I took this as an opportunity to probe a little deeper. I doubted that Endeavor's son was the leak at UA or a troublemaker of any kind, but you never know... "That seems super useful," I said. "And dangerous. A person with both of those could be unstoppable. I bet you have all kinds of offers to join agencies."

"I guess. Pretty sure I'll end up working with my dad."

I grimaced. "Yikes."

"What?" he asked.
"Nothing. I can just... imagine.. that he is tough to... work for. Anyway, why don't you burn me?" I asked.

"What?" he looked surprised.

"Burn me. Burn my upper arm." I scooted closer to him and pushed my sleeve up a little, making sure my arm was exposed to him. "It's the only way I'm going to be able to practice. I need an injury to heal. Or you could hit me or something but that seems weird."
