"You set me up."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
It had been easy to get Hawks to meet with me. One flirty text and he was on his way to the park by my apartment.
"Do I need to say it slower, Hawks? You. Set. Me. Up."
"Come on, kid, you have to give me more info than that. What's wrong? Do you need a hug?" he smirked, walking toward me with open arms.
I swatted him away as he tried to hug me. "Stop playing. Endeavor has pictures of us kissing on the roof that day and at the club. He basically just fired me. The only person who knew we would be at either of those places is you. So start talking. Why did you give him pictures of us?"
Hawks sat down on a bench and smiled at me. "Think of it as insurance."
"You asshole! It was you!"
"He asked me to keep tabs on you. So I did. And as a good employee, I made sure I had documentation."
"Unbelievable! You're the one who put me in those situations in the first place!"
"And I'm also the one who got you a meeting with an actual villain. Have you forgotten that?"
"And conveniently, there are no pictures of any villain. Only of me."
"I can't give away all of my secrets," he said, shrugging. "Some things I keep to myself."
"Like the fact that you're in communication with the League of Villains? Don't you think Endeavor would want to know that?"
"Listen, little song bird, the only way we'll know what the League is planning is if someone can get to their leader. I had a piece to play, so I played it. But I can't have my loyalty to Endeavor be questioned or else I lose that connection too."
"So you make me look like a whore to Endeavor to prove that you're his loyal sidekick, all the while giving the League what it wants to get in good with them."
"Your words, not mine," Hawks said.
"This is the last time I'm speaking to you. Ever. So I hope you enjoyed your 'documentation' because that's not happening again. I'm not going to be some pawn in whatever game you're playing."
"You really don't get it, do you?" he asked.
"Get what?"
"You're already in the game. You were a pawn the minute you agreed to do anything for Endeavor. He uses you, I use you. His game, my game. Although I like to think my game is a lot more fun."
"I hate both of you."
"No, you don't, kid," he said, standing up and putting his arms around me in a hug. "What's up with your face?" he asked, touching my cheek where Endeavor had hit me.
"Don't touch me," I said, pushing him away. I was a little surprised that he could still see it, that meant it hadn't healed.
"Now you're going to make me feel bad. I could get you a second meeting, you know. Set up something this weekend?"
"I can't, I'm going camping," I said. "And because I hate you," I added.
Hawks raised one eyebrow. "Camping?"
"I know, I know, but the whole class is going. Anyway, I'm going home," I said a I started to walk away. "Don't call me."
"Your loss," I heard Hawks say behind me. "Guess you just aren't that committed to seeing this thing through."
"Shut up!" I yelled over my shoulder.
"Face it, you need me. Hate me all you want. That can be kind of fun, actually. But just know that right now I'm the only one who can get you closer to what you want."
I walked back over to him, angry that he was partly right. He was leisurely sitting on the park bench, as if he had no cares at all. The calmer he was, the angrier it made me. "Why don't you just figure it out for me if you're so buddy-buddy with the League?"
"I have my own goals. You have yours."
I sighed and sat down on the bench next to him. "I really do hate you."
"Good," Hawks said, smiling.
Later at my apartment, I was rage-cleaning the kitchen when my phone rang, a blocked number. I knew what that meant. The voice on the other end was the same muffled voice I'd been hearing for the past several weeks.
"We've received your latest transmission, but there wasn't much of use in your files. As you might imagine, we are not pleased with your progress."
"I'm sending you everything I learn. I'm not sure what else you want from me." I really hoped they'd believe that lie. I had left out everything that had happened at the gala and the club with Hawks. I planned on adding that info later, after I had a better grasp of the full picture.
"In an effort to speed up your progress, we've arranged a meeting for you. We're hoping this might light a fire under you."
"A meeting? With who? Where?"
"You'll get a text soon with the location. Be on time." The call ended.
A few hours later I was standing in front of a building that looked like it hadn't been used in at least fifty years. So this is it, huh? An abandoned warehouse is totally where I wanted to spend my evening. I walked around, using my phone as a flashlight, taking care to stay near the door, just in case I needed to bolt out of there. I'd seen enough horror movies to know that it did not always end well for the girl alone in the dark, empty building.
Suddenly I heard a noise behind me which made me jump. Turning around and shining my light toward the sound, I shouted, "Hello?"
"Why are you here?" asked a voice in the darkness. The voice was calm but curious. Meanwhile my hands were shaking but I tried to sound as brave as I could.
"Uh.. I could ask you the same," I replied, shining my light around to try to find the person I was speaking to.
"Who sent you here?" the voice asked.
I figured I might as well be honest. "The scary voice that calls my phone every now and then told me to come here."
I heard a chuckle. And then footsteps somewhere in front of me.
"You are...not who I expected. I wasn't even supposed to be the one to come here tonight."
"Okay well this isn't my dream of how to spend my night either, buddy."
"Alone with a man in the dark isn't your idea of a good time?"
Is this creep flirting with me?
Walking a little further into the warehouse, I followed the sound of the other person's footsteps. I tried using just the light of my phone so I could see where I was walking. Every time I got closer, he seemed to get farther away.
"I don't have all night here," I said finally, checking the time on my watch. "Why am I here and what do you need from me?"
"Well, there's what I was told to say and there's what I'm going to say."
Hearing some leaves crunch on the ground, I thought I had an idea of where he was. I slowly slinked behind a column. "I'm listening," I said.
"Let's start with this - Why do you think you were sent here?"
"To get information from you. How do you know my boss?"
I heard a laugh. "That's for another time."
I spun around and pointed my phone forward. Slowly I could see a person walking toward me. A tall young man, thin with broad shoulders, wearing a long black coat. As my light went to his face, I knew. "Dabi."
He was slowly walking toward me, but stopped a few feet in front of me and sighed, a smile on his face.
"It's a shame you have all those clothes on this time."
I was about to respond but a ball of blue fire came streaming toward my face.
