Epis was making his return to Maiella feeling light with good news. He had went to his father privately and explained the situation being careful to weigh heavily on Maiella's skills, especially her singing. He described his two lovely daughters in much detail, making sure to include their powers, but merely brushed over his son, claiming him to be but a toddler and yet to show his own power. He was careful to make it seem that he had chosen the woman of the mortals because she seemed a like to him and not that he had chosen her out of a shared moment. Airabella did not approve of mere humans getting treated like her own family.
In the end Onicent asked Epis to fetch the human and the daughters so he could see this power for himself. Epis could not pretend not to see a certain amount of greed shining in his fathers eyes. He knew he had to keep a careful eye out, despite what Maiella thought, Epis's house was hardly safe.
He did not suspect anything was wrong when he approached. Maiella was holding Norin in her arms while humming and tending the garden one handed.
"I have returned my love, with the best news." He said joyously.
He had expected to see a smile on her face. But instead she turned to him and he watched as she went from shock to fear.
"Maiella..." He faltered, "what is the matter?"
She backed away from him, still clutching Norin.
"Maiella..." Epis said. He took a small step toward her. "What has happened."
She stood watching him, "not a step closer." She warned in a shaking voice. She was holding Norin so hard he began to cry.
"Put our son down." Epis said.
"Get away from here." She said. "Monster!"
Epis faltered further. He did not understand what was happening. Maiella looked like she was going to run now.
"Maiella, put Norin down." Epis said.
"Do not speak my name." She cried, "leave us!"
Maiella had not let go of Norin who was now wailing. That was it for Epis, he took a long stride forward intending to catch Maiella and release their son.
But Maiella darted away so quickly all Epis got was a stripe of her skirt.
"Maiella! Please come back!" Epis screamed. He felt he had no choice but to chase her.
She ran and he chased following the sound of Norin's screams. While he ran it occurred to him that someone must have enchanted Maiella. For they had loved each other not a day ago. Though he could not focus on this fact, for Maiella was far ahead, and she was heading uphill.
Epis climbed after her till they reached a ridge. Far below was water. Maiella was running along the ridge, getting farther and farther away.
"Maiella!" He cried.
Before he got the words out he watched as she misstepped. He had no time before she tumbled over the side and down into the sea. Epis without pausing dived in after her.
Epis was not harmed by the fall, but Epis was a full grown god. He found her body down below on the sea bed. Norin no longer in her arms. With all his strength he swam her up to shore and lay her on the sand. His power could not heal her for she had already passed into the End. Epis held her, tears streaming down his face. As they hit her she dissolved in his hands, what was left was a pretty red flower. Epis looked down at the cloth still clenched in his hand.
Then he carefully gathered stones together and upon them he wrote her name and then under it his son's. He placed it where her body had been and then took the flower into his inventory intending to plant it at his home.
Maiella had belonged with him there, but someone had taken that. Epis was going to make them pay.
With a heavy heart he walked to the cottage where he found his two daughters, they sensed his sadness and also fell into tears for their mother and brother.
When they had exhausted themselves Epis asked if they had seen anything happen, but they had not.
He mournfully lead them toward his home. Leaving behind the cottage forever. He swore he'd never love again.
