Epis left again to see Maiella as soon as he could. He ventured through the woods till he found their home. When he entered the home Maiella fell into his arms.
"I saw a stranger out the window, a dark form." She shivered and he pulled her closer.
He held her tightly. "Stay here." He whispered.
He walked through the trees but found no traces, and so he decided all must be well.
Maiella calmed down and before long insisted once again that he take the children back with him.
"Please," she said, "allow them to be raised in your mother's grace, I fear for them and myself."
"All is well my love." Epis said, "none shall harm you."
Maiella relented and happily they settled down together again. Epis's three children were pleased to see him, his youngest, Norin, was tottering around on his feet. Hermyra and Lyris hovered over him fearful he should fall.
"Isn't he growing so well." Maiella smiled fondly.
"Indeed," Epis said. He bent down and picked up his little boy. "One day I'll make you a bow like mine." The child giggled and reached for his face.
Epis recoiled just slightly but let the child touch him. The boys hand was warm.
"He's sweet," Maiella said, "not unlike you when I first met you."
"I remember it well." Epis said fondly.
"I was younger," she smiled. But then frowned, "I love you Epis, I do. But there isn't a life here for me in this tiny place."
"We will make a life together my love." Epis said. "You, me and the children shall live happily here, why can't you see it my love."
"Because I belong with you Epis, your children belong with you!" She said strongly, "if you loved me you would take them with you."
Epis considered. Maiella implored him with a look of sadness, then slowly she started to sing. Her song was filled with such longing, but also so much love. Epis felt his heart melt at it. He understood exactly what she felt and wanted to fix it.
"I will go home tonight my love and talk to my parents. Then I shall bring you to my home." He said a small smile on his lips. The feelings from the music faded but Epis's resolved stayed the same. He would go home and find a way to get his father to accept his lover. Maiella would fit in easily enough he decided.
But he was still afraid for her. He didn't want to leave her even for a few minutes.
"Is it cold my love?" He asked suddenly.
"Not at all, are you alright?"
"I am fine," he said. He shuddered though. "I will return soon."
He walked out into the forest once more, casting a last gaze on the home.
