Serse and her son were enjoying a peaceful morning in the village with Hermyra and Lyris. Neonee was working in his studio when Hermyra come in, she stood to the side and watched him work quietly.
"Want to see?" he invited. Hermyra stood at his side and watched him tinker with the Redstone. "I'm making a compact automatic farm so that the villagers don't have to work as hard, our population has grown so much its getting more difficult to keep everyone fed." He wiped his forehead with a hand smudging a bit of the dust onto himself.
"Thats considerate of you," Hermyra said.
"My mother cares the villagers," he explained sounding somewhat defensive. The way he looked at her was in a respect she disliked.
"I understand, we ought to treat the villagers well." She replied somewhat hotly.
Neonee nodded with a slightly delighted look, "you are not like my cousins, although your father is alright so I suppose I am not surprised."
"My mother was a human," she said in response.
Neonee smiled slightly, "I call Serse my mother, before her I had human parents, they died though. I hardly can remember them now."
"My mother died too, that's why we came to the palace and why my father is so dreary. He loved her more than anyone else in this world."
"Your father is perhaps the best of his siblings, minus his twin sister Enisia. His brother though, I warn you to avoid him at all costs, he is the one who gave me these scars." Neonee motioned to his face and arms.
Hermyra put a hand to her mouth, "why would he?"
Neonee laughed somewhat bitterly, "he has taken a liking to my wife Ilodeena. Though I suppose she never was much of one. I would avoid both of them."
"Why are you married to her?" Hermyra asked. This was perhaps a flaw of hers, she had come from a gentle loving world, not the chaotic world Neonee had. She knew little of hardship, because her father had shielded her and her sister so carefully. Neonee knew this looking at her, she had a softness in her voice, and a twinkle in her eye.
"Ilo is hated by my aunt, I imagine she thought a marriage to me would be a lovely punishment." Neonee said, he dropped his eyes away from Hermyra, not wanting to see the impact of his words.
"That doesn't seem right, I thought your family was fair."
Neonee laughed now loudly. "That would be ironic, we are not fair, except perhaps for my mother."
Hermyra nodded and stood a long time in the quiet. Her mind turned over the information, but as if it couldn't enter her thoughts she had an idea that overtook it.
"May I have some of your dust?" She asked.
Neonee nodded and handed her some, taking it she combined it with wood. Then she placed it on the ground. A wonderful sound filled the room. Neonee paused in his work and turned around to see a small simple block on the floor.
"Touch it," Hermyra said.
Neonee placed a hand on it and it trilled a note. "What is this?"
"A gift to your village, and a thank you to you and Serse." She said, "something lovely for your people. I call it a note block."
Neonee smiled, "thank you." He lay some dust next to it and attached a button. The two were still experimenting when they heard a commotion outside.
Neonee dropped what he was doing and ran to see what was happening. Hermyra followed him at a brisk pace.
Floating in the water was a young girl with a fish tail, many villagers hovered near the edge, too frightened to approach.
"Neonee, I bare a massage from Lord Dauntice and Lady Farren. You and Serse must come immediately to his palace," she said in a hissy voice.
Hermyra had never seen anything like the girl before.
"Thank you Syrona." Neonee said, "I shall get my mother immediately."
Syrona nodded and disappeared.
"Who was that?"
"My cousin," Neonee answered briskly.
They found Serse by the well talking to a couple older humans.
"Mother we must go to see Dauntice, it is urgent, Syrona came to tell us."
Serse looked surprised but agreed to come. She told Hermyra and Lyris that they should come as well.
The sky seemed to darken quite suddenly as lightning streaked across, a storm was brewing.
