The Child's POV:
I knew where everything in the nurse's office was.
The bandages, the ice packs, the medicines, the feminine products. I knew where the sick people laid down at and where the parents came to pick them up if needed. I knew where the gloves and masks were kept and where the plastic bags were stored. I knew where the thermometers and the syringes were. I memorized every letter on the eye chart and every file in the file cabinet. It wasn't because I liked going to the nurse's office.
It was because I kept getting sent back.
It wasn't always like this. It started with just copying my homework or stealing my lunch. I let those things slide because I thought they forgot to do their homework or were just hungry. Then it came to writing mean things on pieces of paper and throwing them at me."Stupid human", "Oddball", "Freak", any insult they could throw at me was written. Then things started to get physical, hence my knowledge of the nurse's office.
"Alright, Lucinda, you're good to go," the nurse said as she threw the bloody paper towels in the trash. "Thank you," I replied as I stood up and picked up my bag. Just as I was about to leave, the nurse's voice cut me off."Have you told an adult about this?" she asked. I sighed before turning around and nodding. "I told my sister, my parents, my teachers, even the counselor," I explained, "But no one here understands that I didn't ask to be born a human."
The nurse nodded in understanding before replying."Well, just know that people out there care about you, okay?" she asked."I'll keep that in mind," I replied before leaving. I stayed after-school in the library reading books, trying to find something about people who were like me, and I had an encounter with the cheerleaders and the football team, and things got physical. I luckily managed to get out of there with a few bruises and cuts.
As I left the school building and made my way home, words were spinning in my head. The phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," didn't apply in my situation. Although the football team beat me up, I'd say that the most damage was done by the cheerleaders. "You're such a weirdo," they said. "You don't belong here," they said. But one insult really got to me.
"You'll never be like your sister."
And they were right. Rose was perfect. She was kind, she was smart, she was strong, she was brave. Her hair was as wavy as the ocean, her eyes were bright and full of joy, and her soft smile could light up a room in an instant. She knew how to fight, with or without a weapon, and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. I was ecstatic when Rose said she'd take me in as her protege when I became a police officer. But deep down, I knew one thing...
...I'd never be like her.
8 days later...
"I just...I just don't know what to do..."
I was sitting on Rose's bed as Rose told me what had happened between her and Willow Wolf, one of her closest friends. Rose and Doggy had to arrest her and Rash for stealing food and other supplies around the city. Rose tried to talk to Willow, but Willow got mad at Rose and said something about how "humans like us are exactly what's wrong with this world." Willow and Rose used to be close friends, so I could understand why she was so upset.
"Doggy also said something about how we do things because we have to, not because we want to," Rose explained as she wiped her tears. "Well that's not true," I replied, "You didn't have to offer to take me in as your protege, you wanted to, right?" Rose chuckled and nodded."Yeah, it was my choice," she replied, "But, it's still difficult losing a friend." I nodded. "It can be hard, but they didn't deserve you if they left," I replied.
