⚠️TW!! Mentions of knives and blood!!⚠️
Lucinda's POV:
"I...remembered some things...while...while I was up there."
Doggy had the upper half of my dying father's body on his lap while I sat beside him. "Chief...you shouldn't talk much," Doggy protested. My father struggled to get out his words. "I told you...to call me Michael outside of the station," he replied, "If I'm going to die here...I'm going to give you two information." He turned back to me. "Cindy...I...I also had an older sister," he said, "Madeline...that was her name....I learned some things about her."
I held my father's hand as he went on. "She...she had tuberculosis. But that...that didn't stop her...from living her best life...till the end," he said. I managed to figure out that my father's older sister, my aunt, died from tuberculosis. "Your aunt...was a wonderful woman...atleast, that's what I saw," he went on, "You...you can be just as amazing as she was." I could feel myself sweat more and more as my heart beat faster and faster.
"Cindy...you're a big girl now. You understand what life...and death are," he said with a sad smile, "I love you very much, kiddo...I'll never stop loving you. I don't regret...having you as my youngest daughter. You and your sister have made me the happiest dad on earth." I could feel myself sweating as my grip on my father's hand tightened. "I'll be with...with your sister and mom, and we'll...be watching from above." Any other person would cry, but I still couldn't.
My father then turned back to Doggy. "Doggy...buddy...take care of her for me, will you?" He asked weakly. Doggy could only nod at his colleague's words. I wonder how he felt about seeing his boss die like this. Suddenly, we heard footsteps from the floor above us. "David..." my father muttered, "Doggy...get Cindy out of here. Kid, find Georgie...and figure out what's going on out there." I shook my head vigorously. "Father, we can't leave you here, not with David," I said.
My father only shook his head at my protests. "Sorry, kiddo...It's too late for me," He said, his voice hoarse and getting weaker, "My path has ended here, but yours...yours has just begun." He weakly moved his hand to cup my sweaty cheeks. I put my hand over his as I stared at him. "I know...you may not think you're...good enough, but...you were born with the gifts...of strength and intelligence. How you use them...is up to you." Tears came out of his eyes as he smiled at me.
"You'll be able to realize your true potential, and accomplish great things, I know you will. I...believe..in you...Lucinda..."
His hand fell down to his side.
His face turned dull and blank.
My father was dead.
At that moment, my entire world shattered around me. I lost my sister, mother, and father in less than 3 hours, in one night. I was the last living member of the Emerson family. I failed to keep my family safe. I looked down at my hands pressed onto the floor. I didn't care that there was blood on my knees. The sweat droplets on the floor mixed with my father's blood. My world wasn't the only thing that shattered, however.
That cracking noise was finally gone.
But instead, it was replaced with the loudest sound of glass breaking I've ever heard, followed by a painful ring in my ears. I gasped before covering my ears with my cold and bloody hands. My head ached even more than usual as I shut my eyes tightly. It had lasted for a few moments, but it felt like an eternity. Soon after, I lowered my hands from my ears and onto my lap. I was breathing heavily while sweating. Then, something shiny caught my eye.
It was on my late father's belt. Upon further inspection I realized that it was a holster for something. I tilted my head before removing the holster from the belt and opening it. Inside, was a black butterfly knife with a blue handle. My mind immediately went back to a few weeks after my 8th birthday. I was playing with Luna, when my father came up to me with the exact blade in my hands. He started doing different tricks while avoiding getting cut by the black blade.
