⚠️TW!! EXTREME BLOOD AND GORE!! Book 2 spoilers!⚠️

Lucinda's POV:
I could handle small spaces well.

Small spaces with an infected in them was a different story. I realized that when I found myself standing infront of the vent, wrench in hand, watching Mousy crawl by. My chapped lips trembled slightly as my breathing grew heavier and heavier. The infected mouse crawled by once more, and I knew that I couldn't procrastinate forever. I slowly got down on my knees before putting my free hand against the wall infront of me, right above the vent.

My plan was to go into the vents after Mousy passed, follow her around and take down the cover with the wrench. I managed to be subtle while telling Zizzy to move over to below one of the openings of the ventilation system. I didn't tell her of my intentions of going into a vent, but I knew that she would find out eventually. Mousy crawled past me once more, and I took that as my cue. I took a deep breath before doing what I believed to be the unthinkable.

I crawled into the vent.

My heart was pounding in my chest. Sweat rolled down my face as my grip on the wrench tightened. I had to do this quickly, otherwise I'd die. I forced myself to push any negative outcomes I was thinking about out of my head and continued to crawl. I had to keep a certain distance away from Mousy while also not letting her out of my sight. I couldn't let her get behind and pounce on me. I held back a sigh and kept looking ahead.

It was hard turning corners while my entire body felt like it was being compressed into a singularity. I turned a corner once more and was now facing the air cover. A sigh of relief nearly escaped my cold and chapped lips as I waited for Mousy to crawl away. Once she did, I used the wrench to knock the air cover off of the wall. I quickly crawled out of the vents before letting out an extremely heavy sigh I didn't know I was holding.

Once I managed to calm myself down as best as I could, I slowly stood up and looked around the room I was in. The room was empty besides a shelf that sat behind me. Sitting on that shelf was a green keycard. I knew that I needed it for the vault in the room across, but I couldn't take it yet. I needed to use the wrench on the door. With that thought in my head, I sighed before leaving the room and walking to the boarded door, tracing my fingers along the glass railing.

The red panel next to the door turned green once I used the wrench on it. Seeing the wooden board on the door made me remember the crowbar I left in the clothing store. I went down to the first floor before heading back over to the clothing store, where the crowbar sat next to the open vault. I put down the wrench and picked up the crowbar before leaving and going back up the escalator. Once I reached the door, I took the final board off of the door. "Okay," I muttered, "Now I just need the white key..."

I went back to the room that met the vents Mousy was crawling in and turned to look at the shelf on my left. I picked up the green keycard that sat on the shelf and put the crowbar down in its place. I walked out of the room and around the railing to the room with all of the kitchen supplies in it. After using it on the vault, I opened it and found what seemed to be a mirror inside. "A mirror?" I asked, "What do I need a mirror for?"

I took the mirror out of the vault before curiosity filled my head. I had the opportunity to look at myself in a mirror, something I wasn't able to and refused to do for so long. I hesitated slightly as my eyes were locked on the wall a few feet away. I wanted to see what I looked like to others, but my gut was telling me that I wouldn't like what I saw. I let out a heavy sigh and chose to ignore my gut feeling, just this once. I forced myself to turn in the direction of the mirror.

I instantly regretted it.

A gasp escaped my lips at the sight before me. Although it was partially what I expected, I was still surprised. My eyes that people once said shone so bright were now dull and nearly resembled a dark void. The dark circles under my eyes were visible shades of gray and blue. The dirt from the forest and the doctor's and zombies blood stained and smeared my cold cheeks. My cheeks and my nose were a light but visible shade of pink due to the cold. Overall, I looked horrible.
