Wren POV:

"The Indestructible City is the last village! City! Whatever!" Violet yelled over the wind.

On Sky's back, Wren's hands clenched tighter. She had been avoiding going back to that place. Not becasue of the horrors she'd witnessed . . . but because Undauntable was there. And he was probably dead.

"Maybe there'll be survivors!" Leaf said loudly. "There were some in other villages that weren't underground!"

Yeah, and they were half-dead. Almost burnt to a crisp.

"Cheer up, Wren!" Daffodil shouted. "We're finally free! Living with dragons like you wanted! And they won't eat us!"

Well, that didn't mean they were going to look at them like they were still food. Which they weren't, AHEM.

The City came into view. The tall stone wall was blackened and crumbling; many parts of the cliff had fallen . . . were those bones at the bottom of the cliff?

Wren choked back a gag.

When they landed, Leaf, Violet, and Daffodil immediately calling, "Hello? Is there anyone here? We're here to save youuuu!" nonstop. These missions were really starting to get on Wren's nerves. Especially since the Indestructible City was the last place she wanted to be. What if he wasn't here?

Ew. Get rid of these thoughts. So what if he died. You don't care anyways.

Right?

Wren trudged over to a cave in the side of the cliff. Couldn't they just get on with it? There was no one here! Wren sat heavily on a rock with a sigh. What a waste of time.

A rock tumbled down the cliff a few feet away from her. Wren jumped up, a small dagger in hand. "Whoa, wait, it's just me," said a vaguely familiar voice, although it was dry and raspy.

"Who's there?" Wren barked, hating herself for trembling.

"Wren found someone!" Daffodil yelled.

From the cave beside her, a person emerged. He had a few burns and cuts, but he was intact (unlike many of the corpses around them). Undauntable emerged with a small backpack in hand, blinking in the sunlight for a few minutes, before his eyes landed on Wren. She frowned at him. "Oh. Hi. It's you."

"Yes," Undauntable replied slowly. "Where have you been?"

"We-Undauntable! You're alive! Wren was so worried!" Daffodil said, as usual saying too much. Wren looked for a hole to burrow into. No holes anywhere. Oops.

Undauntable looked even more embarrassed than Wren felt, pink flushing his cheeks. "Uh, hi."

"Ah HA!" Violet cried. "I knew it! Another surviv-oh. It's just Undauntable."

"Just?" the boy asked indignantly.

"Is there anyone else here?" Leaf asked, serious as ever.

Undauntable slumped. "No. I couldn't find anyone. Been searching for a week now. I guess I was just lucky. I was just checking out the dungeon when . . . this happened. Everyone else on ground level . . . died."

"I'm sorry," Leaf said, patting Undauntable on the back. "We've all lost someone. It was hard not to. We can all try to stick together."

"Where were you when this happened?"

"Well, these dragons came and grabbed us along with all these other Earth humans, and we were put in this mountain." Violet said. She loved telling this story, although when it had really happened, she had been screaming the loudest of all of them. "So when this happened, the top of the mountain simply blew off. We were all pretty much fine. Then Wren yelled at the top of her lungs until some dragons-well, Sky-came and let us all out."
