Moon's POV:

"What . . . just happened?" Kinkajou asked, her voice shaky.

"I think . . . Winter got attacked . . . then Qibli tried to attack them . .. and then he . . . he . . ." Moon gulped. She couldn't speak anymore. What had happened was just too . . . shocking. No. Not shocking. Horrifying. Were all scavengers—magic scavengers?—so evil? Moon dearly hoped not. Otherwise . . . otherwise they're all going to be in big trouble.

Suddenly, the heard thunderous wingbeats behind them.

One of the scavengers yelled something in their squeaky language over the wingbeats and the trio sped across the ocean to Pyrrhia.

Oh no . . .

But Moon was more intent on the three dragons in the lead of the group of . . . was it . . .

LeafWings? And SilkWings?

"Cricket! Sundew! Luna!" Kinkajou yelped.

"BLABLABOO!" Bumblebee cried.

"Oh yeah. And hi to you too." Kinkajou added, waving at the dragonet, though her smile was strained.

"What are you doing here?" Moon wondered.

"We discovered something, after you left. Maybe we should tell you on land, you both look tired." Sundew said, tilting her head as if puzzled. "Wait . . . shouldn't there be more of you?"

Moon barely registered what she'd asked. But Kinkajou did. "We'll tell you later, too." she said, glancing worriedly at Moon.

"Fine," Sundew complained grumpily. "Let's go get some answers."

They arrived on that sort of unoccupied beach that 'belonged' to Jerboa. The moment she saw them coming, she started waving like mad.

"What happened? Is everything okay? Why are you all here? We don't have space for all these new dragons! We'll need to arrange something with all the queens! Where will you live? What's your natural habitat? Do you guys need food?" Jerboa asked frantically.

"Yes for that last one!" someone announced.

"That's not important right now!" a LeafWing scolded, one that Moon didn't know.

"We'll fill you in on everything," Luna told Jerboa, glancing at Moon and Kinkajou too. "But I ALSO expect a FULL UPDATE."

"You . . . might want to sit down." Cricket said.

"I'll be here too. But . . . the rest . . . Do you have somewhere they can stay for a while?" the unfamiliar LeafWing asked.

"Certainly. I'll bring them there and then we can have a little chat in my hut." Jerboa smiled faintly, but it disappeared in a matter of seconds.

"Wait . . . where are the other two? Winter and Qibli?" she asked.

This time Moon couldn't hold it in. Her tears leaked down, and before she knew it, she was on the ground, sobbing, and no one could comfort her.

"Maybe now's a good time for you to fill us in on your little ocean adventure," Luna suggested.

Kinkajou nodded, rubbing Moon's back, but she was crying too.

Sundew sighed. "I gather this will go on for a while," she grumped.

But soon enough, Moon had gathered enough strength to whisper one sentence.

"They're probably dead."
