Alvar POV:
Dragons.
They were hunting down dragons.
Of all creatures that ever existed, Alvar had never thought that they'd be dragons.
Well, life was not so normal anymore.
So, dragons it is.
The ground below them shrank smaller and smaller, and Alvar could barely make out the tiny ant figures of the Councillors, his siblings, the 'army', as the Council has called the elves gathered down below.
He looked up, and he nearly dropped his hold on Vespera.
The dragon world was big, not only because dragons were bigger that elves, but as in the whole planet itself was larger than theirs.
The dragons were nowhere to be seen, though. Not a flit of wings, a swish of a tail . . . nothing.
He could see the weird tree-like buildings to the right, and some tiny forests to the left... but what was right above them was just . . . blue.
A vast body of blue.
Blue like—
"We're entering the dragon planet from the ocean?" Alvar asked.
"Yeah," Fintan said gruffly from Alvar's other side. "What's the problem? Afraid of getting wet?"
"No—just wondering." he replied.
Lady Gisela clucked her tongue. "Remember, boys, you two are only here for distraction. You'll be going back where you belong soon enough."
"That's not what you said," Fintan said. "You freed me from that ice cell to kill dragons for you, yes, and I'm fine with that. We are supposed to be working together."
"Fintan, Fintan, Fintan," Gisela sighed, as if he were a child who understood nothing. "Collaboration will never benefit you."
"Then why am I here?" Alvar asked. Lady Gisela had found him after he escaped from his own brothers attempt to murder him, and said that he was needed. Alvar had been so desperate to get on good terms with anyone in the Neverseen that he had agreed—although the look of glee on Lady Gisela's face when he said yes was not very reassuring.
Lady Gisela shrugged again now, that expression on her face again. It was Vespera who answered: "You aren't necessary. You are preferred, though, because we need people like you to make sure we can fulfil our mission."
Fintan snorted. "In other words, you're bait."
"I'm not," Alvar argued. When no one said anything, he frowned. "Doesn't matter. I'm not letting you use me."
"They already are," said Fintan unhelpfully.
"Stop it," Alvar hissed. Lady Gisela's very not reassuging smile widened, and as usual, Vespera hid all her emotions away behind that blank mask of hers. It was like she was oblivious to their argument.
Fintan's hand warmed in his. "You be careful, Vacker. I'm not afraid to hurt you, and you won't like what I do. Now be quiet and just do your job. Which is to get eaten so we can get away."
"I—what?"
"Fintan," Gisela chided. "You ruined the surprise!"
Alvar must've looked a bit more shocked than he should have shown, because Fintan smirked and "accidentally" smacked him in the head, disorienting him. He was falling a minute later, faster and faster back towards the earth. He fumbled to stop his fall with levitation, but it wasn;t working fast enough. And yet, he still managed to hear Fintan's lauhg and Gisela's reprimand.
Alvar watched, angry and helpless, as they reached the dent in the dome bin no time at all, as if dropping him made their ascent faster.
"On three, levitate yourselves right into the other planet. One . . . two . . . three!" Lady Gisela called, loud enough for even Alvar to hear with the wind roaring in his ears.
