Mandrake POV:

Mandrake had never experienced anything as terrifying as falling from the sky without using the wings he had.

He tried desperately not to shake, so the elf perched on his back wouldn't notice. She was apparently very used to this. He, on the other hand, was not.

"I need to see a picture of the Poison Jungle," Sophie told Sundew.

"Sorry, we don't have any." Sundew said sarcastically. "We always carry around pictures of a place we are in all the time. And we totally decided to pack pictures as an essential as we fled."

"No need of that," Sophie smiled knowingly. "I can just read it from your mind."

"Mind reading?" Mandrake asked. He only knew one person who could do that, and it was Moon. Sophie wasn't a dragon now, was she?

"Ah," Sundew said. "Um, no thanks."

"Then how are we going to get there?" Sophie asked, exasperated. "I need to know where we're going, or how will we get there?"

"You, uh," Mandrake started. "Can read . . . my mind?"

"You," Sundew said, eyebrow raised. "Really?"

"What?" Mandrake asked.

"Never thought you'd volunteer for . . . anything, I guess." Sundew shrugged. "But yeah, by all means, go poke through all his thoughts for all I care."

Sophie levitated—Mandrake was still confused—why didn't she need wings—onto Mandrake's back and put her palms on his temples. Mandrake flinched.

"Oh, sorry," Sophie said, pulling her hands back. "I should have asked."

"Oh, well, uh, I guess it's fine?" he said.

Sophie put her palms back on his temples.

The male elf still on Sundew's back snorted.

"What?" Sophie asked, popping her eyes back open.

The male elf mimed putting his palms on Sundew's temples, and she used her tail to thump him on the back.

Sophie and the other female elf on Mandrake's back giggled as the male looked behind him to see what had hit him and failed to realize it was Sundew's tail.

"Just let me get started, okay?" Sophie said. "Now shush."

Sophie closed her eyes, meaning she'd probably started. Mandrake tried—hard—but he couldn't feel her anywhere in his head.

Not even a minute later, Sophie opened her eyes and levitated back to Sundew's back. "I'm ready," she said.

With that, there was yet another clap of thunder, and suddenly they were crash-landing right outside the Poison Jungle.

"Can we stop at our village first?" Sundew asked. "I want to refill my pouches."

"Sure," the female elf—Biana—said. "Wait, what pouches?"

"With what?" Sophie asked at the same time.

"All sorts of useful plants and insects." Sundew said.

"Insects?" The male asked. Mandrake had yet to figure out his name.

"Fire ants, for example," Mandrake said.

"Whats?" The same elf asked.

"Never mind." Sundew said. "Just follow us. We've been out in the open too long."
