Sophie's POV:

For a moment, after that roar, no one said anything. They all just stared up at the sky as if they thought a dragon would suddenly come flying into their beautiful world.

"Well, I guess that was just some random dragons fighting," Councillor Emery laughed nervously.

Sophie was about to agree, when there were a few other roars. Maybe to the others they were incomprehensible, but to her, they were words. Maybe she wasn't translating them properly . . . but why were the dragons roaring about "magic scavengers" and "promises" while fighting?

Besides . . . "magic scavengers" was what they had called her and the other elves when they went to talk to them. There couldn't be any elves left there though. They went through a head count. Eleven times.

Everyone glanced at the sky again, curious and frightened.

As the Councillors opened their mouths to try to calm everyone down again, there was one last loud roar and . . .

. . . as everyone raised their heads to their dented dome of a sky . . .

. . . what they saw was . . .

. . . a . . .

. . . dragon . . . .

It was falling from the other planet, and desperately trying to fly.

It was as white as snow, and had pale blue undertones, like ice.

But there was something else too.

It was black and steaming hot on the dragon's scales, and it evidently did not fit in with its coloring.

They looked like . . . burns.

It seemed the idea had dawned on everyone else too, because some sent the falling dragon a pitying look. Others seemed to think it was too gory, and they turned away, covering their mouths.

But Sophie, Fitz, Keefe, Tam, Linh, Biana, and Marella seemed to think that it was fascinating, and ran to it, even with Grady shouting at them to stop, everyone screaming because it was about to fall on them, and the wide-eyed Councillors staring at them, mouths open but not ordering them to stop and come back.

As the dragon was just about to fall on them, they caught it with telekinesis, lowering it gently on their own burnt grass.

Linh immediately rushed to its side, cooling the burns with water she'd gathered.

Sophie had wanted to run over there too, but imaginary burns made her hesitate for a moment.

Fitz and Keefe, though, did not have the same reservations, and they ran over to Linh to see the dragon.

Now, the dragon was unconscious, breathing raggedly, and looked as if it were dying.

Sophie suddenly had a realization that checking on it was probably important, so she was about to run to the dragon when Marella grabbed her arm.

"Those are the burns of a Pyrokinetic." she whispered, pointing at some hand-shaped marks along the dragon's spine. It was blue and yellow in some places. Balefire and Everblaze.

Fintan.

Sophie nodded as Marella fought to control the flames, and decided it would be better if she could read its mind and see what had happened.

Cautiously, she made her way to the dragon's massive head. She was too short to put her hands on its temples, though, and required Fitz to take the other one. On three, they pushed themselves into its mind, despite the shouts from their bodyguards.

There really was no way to describe a dragon's mind. At the same time, it was prickly, warm and so much more open than an elvin mind. Sophie had no problem finding the memory she needed, translating what she needed with her Polyglot abilities, when it clicked.

This is the dragon I saw when I talked to a small group of them in Jupiter, she transmitted to Fitz.

He looked at her, surprised.

But in the memory, wasn't it flying across the ocean? You were on land, weren't you? he asked.

I was, she thought, puzzled.

They continued watching the memory silently, until the dragon turned his head to a random patch of ocean, and another one pointed at something that rose out of it.

Three figures, hoods down, with a cloaks that belonged to no other than the Neverseen.
