Sophie POV:
"Hello, dragon," a figure that could only be Lady Gisela said in Dragon.
"Who are you?" Winter snarled defensively.
"Winter, don't do anything. I'll handle her," Sophie said.
"I can handle her better than you! You're so tiny!" he cried. "Well, then again . . . she is too."
"Seriously, why don't you go somewhere far, far, away so that I can have a nice little conversation here." Sophie tried again. She turned back to Lady Gisela with a fierce scowl.
Well, she assumed it was her, since she was the only Polyglot in the Neverseen they knew about.
Winter sighed, turning on his heels, then spun around suddenly, blasting some sort of ice at Lady Gisela.
Gisela screamed, and soon, she was engulfed in the blue ice, frozen.
"There," Winter announced, pleased.
"W-what was that?" Sophie asked, shaken.
"Oh," Winter said. "I thought you'd have found that from my memories. That's how you knew about the Ice Kingdom, right?" Sophie was still gaping at Gisela, so he continued, "It's called frostbreath," he added.
"Will she die?" Sophie asked.
"Probably. Unless someone just lets her stay there for the rest of her days," Winter told her. "Which is today."
"REALLY?" Sophie couldn't keep the squeal out of her voice. "She'll die?"
"I mean, yeah. Frostbreath does that." Winter explained, slightly confused.
"What happened? Why—" Grady gaped at the frozen Lady Gisela.
"That was Winter!" Sophie said in the Enlightened Language. "Not me!"
"What?" Winter asked. "Why are you all so happy?"
"Do you have ANY IDEA how great of a victory this is?" Grady asked Winter. " We finally have a chance to win!"
"Wait . . . What did you say?" Winter asked.
". . . Oh . . . Right. Sorry," Grady said apologetically.
Winter seemed to get it.
"Don't worry, Dex is trying to make a Dragon-Enlightened language translator right now." Sophie told Grady. "But . . . What do we do with her?"
"Oh, I suppose I can call the Council . . . or you can, given your newest status . . ." Grady said thoughtfully. "But I think we need to tell your mother. She'll certainly drop a pile of manure on us if we don't."
"Already on it!" Edaline cried, racing towards them.
Grady winced, preparing to be dumped on.
"This time I was kidding. But next time . . ." Edaline warned.
"Um, I'm here too, you know." Winter interjected, annoyed.
"Sorry," Sophie said sheepishly.
"Hold up," Grady said as Sophie began fishing around her cape for a leaping crystal to get to the Council. "Lady Gisela might be using body regulation and breathing control."
"Oh yeah," Sophie seemed to droop.
"Don't worry, we'll find a way to contain her." Edaline said. "In fact, I already have a plan."
Edaline had called Marella over. Marella made a small flame barricade in the gorgodon's cage, and Grady moved the frozen Lady Gisela in it. Marella sealed the flame barricade and left.
"There," Edaline said, seeming pleased with their work.
"Now can I go tell the Council?" Sophie asked.
"Sure, I suppose. Can you tell Winter to stay here and not wander?" Grady asked.
"Well, I can try . . . he's a stubborn one." Sophie said.
Naturally, Winter disagreed. He said he'd fly high in the clouds above the property to stretch his wings and come back. Grady and Edaline agreed to that, though they were a little doubtful.
"I KNOW that you're TALKING ABOUT ME." Winter told Sophie as she was about to leap.
"It's nothing to worry about." Sophie reassured him. "Just . . . stay here, okay. If humans see you . . ."
"May you remind me what that is?" Winter asked.
Sophie rattled off a short explanation, and Winter flared his wings in excitement.
"Ooh! Scavengers! Can I go get one?" Winter asked.
"No!" Sophie cried, alarmed.
"Oh," he said, his wings drooping. "Okay, then."
When Sophie came home, there was a racket.
Her parents were screaming and yelling, and Winter was in the sky, hovering, something small clutched in his talons.
That something was screaming, too.
It was a familiar scream.
Amy.
