Sundew POV:
"We have to go," Moon told Cricket. "We need to tell Pyrrhia about this new truce thing."
"Oh," she said. "But can't you stay? I mean I'd be so happy if you could stay and then we could stud—be friends!"
"What she means," Sundew said. "Is: 'Can't you please stay I really want to know are you like Clearsight and what is that again?'" Sundew pointed at Kinkajou, who scowled and said, "RAINWING, why will nobody REMEMBER that."
"No, really, I'd love to stay, but if the scavengers find out that we have another continent that wasn't warned, wouldn't they attack there?" Moon reasoned.
"Yeah," Blue said sympathetically. "And that's your home. You must miss it."
"I guess this is goodbye then . . ." Moon said.
"Yeah. We'll see you soon?" Cricket asked.
"As soon as possible," Moon said with a smile.
Sundew watched the four dragonets fly off into the distance, becoming specks in the sky. They should probably be going home now too. They were on teh run from teh Hives, and the Poison Jungle would be the safest place to be. And Belladonna would want Sundew to meet her there. And yet . . . she wondered if everything would still be the same if they really were living with a planet full of reading monkeys—or scavengers, as the Pyrrhians called them—attached to their planet. And how—
"Sundew! You've GOT to see this!" Cricket yelped.
"It's actually pretty cool," Luna admitted. "I never thought a planet full of reading monkeys would be so pretty."
"If it hadn't been so destroyed." Blue said wistfully. Sundew knew he was already one of those reading monkeys, being devastated or sad or those annoying feelings you get when your home is destroyed. Which, Sundew thought bitterly, happened all too often to her. And she hadn't even seen the original Pantala, covered with trees!
"SUNDEW!" Cricket screeched with what could only be sheer excitement.
Oh dear.
Sundew went to the edge of the cliff, where Luna, Blue, Cricket (who had Bumblebee) and Swordtail were leaning so far out, they were in danger of toppling into the ocean.
Well, maybe just Cricket.
But, well, in her defense, it was rather pretty.
Vast forests and glittering buildings, lakes and beaches and all sorts of places. A wispy while veil that was probably clouds was covering parts of their world from view, but Sundwe could see so many details. So many things. Their planet was mostly blue and green, water and land, and from where she was, she could see some deserts, mountains . . .
But something was off about that world. Sundew squinted at a large forest thast only looked to be about the size of her talon from her height. Unblinking, she stared at it for a long, long, time.
And then . . . There!
That . . . that flicker.
There it was again!
In the flicker, she could just make out . . . a bunch of those glittering buildings, but taller, way less glittery, grayer, and . . . just less appealing.
A quick glance at Cricket told her that she had seen the same thing.
"Shush." she said before Cricket could explode with questions. The HiveWing clamped her talons across her snout to stop herself form asking questions, but her expression made Sundew roll her eyes anyway. Finally she couldn't help herself.
"What was it? A hidden city? Ohhh! Maybe it was a whole CITY of reading monkeys! Wouldn't that be so cool?" Cricket asked, jumping up and down.
"See what?" Swordtail asked. "I don't see anything!"
"Of course you don't," Sundew said. "Look at that forest on the left. Stare at it until your eyeballs dry and you'll see it."
"Hey!" Cricket yelped. "Look! You see those reading monkeys? Aren't some of them the ones who came to see us?"
Sundew peered into the ocean. There were those dots moving around and around . . . Those weren't the reading monkeys, were they?
"But... does anyone else see those ones?" Blue asked, pointing at around four reading monkeys far in front of them. "They look like they're heading to the Distant Kingdoms."
Sundew hissed. "They said they wouldn't attack!" she said. "They're lying centipedes! Let's go chase them and toss ACTUAL fire centipedes on their HEADS!"
"That's . . . not a great idea," Cricket said. "What if they're really here to study us? What if they want to be friends?"
"Study? Nah," Sundew said, waving a talon at her. "They want the territory. Somewhere to live, all to themselves. SO WE MUST HUNT THEM DOWN."
"Uh, guys?" Blue said, nervously, edging towards Sundew. "Is that them?"
Hi! From this point on, Wings of Fire 13 has happened.
So basically here, what happened was Sundew and Cricket and Blue and Swordtail did NOT immediately begin flying to the Poison Jungle. Moon and Qibli and everyone arrived instead they herded everyone to the other Hives, as in the previous chapters. And now, just insert Wings of Fire 13 here and then continue . . .
