Sophie POV:
"Everyone gather around, form a chain," shouted Mr. Forkle in attempt to create order. Few elves shuffled into the chain he had wanted.
"Teleporting?" asked some elf Sophie didn't know, but Mr. Forkle shook his head before she could answer. "Not really. We have to jump into a hole, and we can not get separated." he frowned at the chaos in the human mansion—Marie's, Sophie believed.
"What's with the comb?" asked a young—or maybe old, Sophie couldn't tell anymore—elf, as she grabbed Sophie's left hand.
"It's our path to the Neverseen hideout," explained the grumpy old man with a sigh. "Now get ready. Dex and the others are waiting for us."
Five minutes later, everything was as organized as possible, including the bodyguards on either side of Sophie (Sandor had pushed the poor elf away), Mr. Forkle in the lead, the other members of the Collective scattered throughout the line (Blur had to reform his hands) and the thirty or forty or so elves gathered to fight.
"Ready?" asked Mr. Forkle.
There were only half-hearted "yeses" but Sophie couldn't blame them. She was nervous, too.
Taking a deep breath, the leader of the Black Swan twisted the comb on what seemed like midair (but was actually where the comb would have been if it was still in the vanity) and a hole appeared right under his feet. Mr. Forkle fell through without so much as a yelp (Sophie couldn't believe the old man wasn't scared) and dragged Sophie through with him.
As elves began falling—only just managing to keep their screaming under control—the hole began closing. There were shouts at the surface, and suddenly it seemed there were more people falling with them. Sophie frowned. Maybe Mr. Forkle should have given the comb to someone at the back.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, they crashed in a pile on the floor. Mr. Forkle hurried to the nearest boarded window and tried to see outside. He sucked in a breath, "There are many guards outside. Everyone get ready to storm them."
One elf seemed to freeze. "What?" asked Blur, who waved a hand (or what was left of it) in front of him.
"How many Neverseen members are here?" asked the elf.
"Maybe a hundred. We aren't sure."
"A . . . hundred?"
"Come on, you can't get cold feet now!" cried another elf.
"I . . ."
"Hurry," said Squall suddenly. "They heard something."
"Sophie, did Dex tell you what window they broke?" asked Mr. Forkle as everyone gathered their weapons.
"This one," she shoved at a random window and it shattered. Sophie caught the pieces with her telekinesis so it wouldn't make a noise.
"Everyone out. Hide on the roofs you were ordered to. And slowly make your way to Sophie's old human house. You should know where that is," said Mr. Forkle as he practically pushed everyone out. Sophie's bodyguards attempted to push her out first, but she stayed behind until only the Collective was left. By then some Neverseen guards had come to patrol.
Wraith completely vanished. Blur ran through the wall. Squall made for the window. Granite was right after her. And Sophie's bodyguards shoved her at the window.
Climbing out after Granite, she saw Mr. Forkle struggling to get through. She tugged on his arm, and he came through with a pained oof. Sophie hurriedly covered the window again with the pieces as Mr. Forkle urged them to run. "Meet you there," he panted as he scurried across the roofs far faster than any old man Sophie had seen.
