Sundew POV:
"WHAT?" Moon shrieked. "A SUMMONS? ALL OF THEM? EVEN . . . EVEN WASP?"
"Yes," Deathbringer said calmly.
Sundew perked up. The two NightWings had been at this for the past hour. Moon shrieking as Deathbringer told her the news. Sundew had been sleeping and resting from all the energy she pooled into their leafspeak-filled escape (until shrieks woke her up, of course). The breath of evil had crawled at a slow but steady pace, reaching out its tendrils for the dragons. Sundew had tried to stop it. It had simply sneered at her.
As they'd pushed injured dragons onto rafts and stretchers, they had head wingbeats. A large mass of dragons blocked out the moons' light, separated in two groups. The first group was all that was left of their dragons, maybe a little less than half, fleeing as fast as possible, towards them. The second was the HiveWings and other newly-hive-minded dragons from the battle. The group was triple the size of the first, maybe a little more, and the fleeing dragons hadn't bothered fighting back for fear of being controlled as well.
Sundew had rushed back to the cliffs. The rafts weren't going to be enough, and what would stop the Hive-minded group from chasing them anyways? No, they would have to disappear . . . to where? Flying was impossible with the number of dragons they had that were injured, and going on the rafts were about as successful even if Sundew found a current they could drift on. What else? The sky was clear, no mist or fog as far as she could see . . . unless . . .
Under the water? Could she do that? Wrap the seaweed over the rafts so tight over the dragons that they could breathe underwater for a while, until they lost the Hive-minded dragons? They already had enough rafts made, after all. And with all the seaweed under the sea that she'd felt, maybe it could work.
"Sundew!" Mandrake had called. "Help us stop the breath of evil!"
She had ignored him, focusing as she called the seaweed, ignoring the breath of evil's taunts in the background. The seaweed was surprisingly flexible, and soon she had made about fifty rafts each fitting five dragons at most. She had woven some stretchers together for make room for more dragons, then made walls, tightly woven like a basket. The injured dragons already there looked at her in surprise, but they seemed to get what she was doing. Soon she had made enough walls to cover everyone fast enough and she ushered everyone fighting the breath of evil in the clearing into the rafts. She told Mandrake and her father the plan, and they said they'd help her close the top of the baskets as tightly as possible.
That was why there were seaweed baskets closing up as she waited for the rest of their group alone. Luna and Io were the first to arrive. They were panting as listened quietly as Sundew explained the escape plan. They immediately agreed, passing along the information. Only Luna and Sundew were left as the Hive-minded dragons began their descent, claws reaching for them. There was no more space left on the rafts.
"Hurry, Sundew! I'll hold them off!" Luna cried, shooting flamesilk at both the dragons and the breath of evil. Any other day, Sundew would have grabbed Luna to stop her from igniting her forest, but now, perhaps it was for the best. Maybe she could set a forest fire so large that kills it, no matter how slim the chance.
"Okay!" Luna shouted back at her, and Sundew realized that she'd yelled that at Luna. Sundew called more seaweed, ignoring the breath of evil again, although that time (to her amusement) it had been screeching in pain as the fire reached its vines. The dragons had also paused a moment before soaring over the growing walls of flame to them. Sundew called the seaweed more frantically as she felt the wind from the wingbeats descending to her.
At last, she finished the raft. "Luna!" she'd screamed as she had climbed in, slashing her claws across diving dragons' underbellies, relishing in their screams. Luna shot one last strand of burning hot flamesilk as she joined Sundew in the raft. Closing the hole up as fast as possible, she sank all the rafts as fast as possible, guiding the strands of seaweed connecting the rafts to sea floor into the closest current she could find to get them out of there.
