“There are so many reasons I find this uncomfortable right now.”

Looking around the living room I tried to understand the situation. Trish lay on the couch flipping through some magazine seemingly minding her own business while Michael sat on the floor in front of the couch eating a bag of popcorn trying not to check Trish’s legs out as they lay exposed by her shorts along the edge of the couch.

Turning to Mia next to me I raised my eyebrow curiously, “I thought you said Michael was going out?”

Still as expressionless as when she had greeted me at the front door, Mia shrugged her shoulders as she turned to move to the corner of the room.

“When he heard you called, he said he’d stick around.”

Looking over to Trish I caught her watching Mia over the cover of the magazine, a curious look on her face as she did so.

“And her…?” I asked curiously

Trish snickered as she glanced my way, “Hello to you too Stanley.”

All Mia gave me was a shrug as she continued to make her way to the single couch and sit, still looking as dejected as a drowned puppy. When I had called her to confirm our meet up I should have known something had changed from this morning. Turning to Michael I noticed him looking at Mia, concern etched in his face. Catching my glance he sighed as he looked over at Trish.

“I was going to hang with Trish before you called, but then I decided not to,” shrugging as his sister did he carried on stuffing his mouth as he did so, “Trish figured she could join and I figured why not?”

“Okay…” I trailed off pinching my nose in concentration I tried to understand their train of thought. Turning to Mia I walked over to her my voice low.

“Mia… the reason I called, I was kind of hoping we could- you know, talk?”

Mia looked up blankly at me and I wasn’t too sure she heard me until she spoke,

“Talk?” she asked blankly, her voice distant as if the idea seemed foreign to her.

“Yeah,” I was beginning to get worried as I scanned her face. Mia didn’t seem like herself and despite the fact that it was already supposed to be awkward between us all things considered, it wasn’t exactly the feeling I was getting from her. Instead it felt as if Mia wasn’t even sitting here, she seemed too troubled and distant.

“Talk about what?” she asked, her voice blank as she stared into space, not even remotely interested in me or her surroundings, it was odd seeing her like this. Was I wrong in assuming we could talk like we used to? Was this just Mia’s brand of dealing with rejected pursuers?

Glancing uncertainly to the two still lounging by the couch in front of the TV I responded as softly as I could.

“Well, about the other day…” turning back to Mia I scratched my head nervously, not sure how much I could say in front of her brother, let alone Trish Braker, “could we maybe go somewhere else?”

Sighing heavily Trish suddenly waved the magazine through the air and dumped it at the base of her feet.

“Oh for crying in a bucket- Mia the guy probably wants to talk to you about the day you broke his heart or Amy,” tilting her head to the side she added, “or both. But what he clearly can’t seem to see is that you aren’t exactly functioning at the moment.”
