“Why do you let them pass you on the fourth round?”

Amy seemed startled as she turned around to look for the owner of the voice I smiled as she found me up in the bleachers.

“Oh- you scared me! I didn’t think anyone but us was on the fields this afternoon.” The runner said blushing slightly as she moved a little off the field for a better view of her observer.

I laughed recognizing her strategy and moved from the shadows so she could see me. After having sit for a few hours watching them it felt right finally talking to the star of the track team. Even as a freshman she owned the field and though some of the seniors seemed to beat her as well as a few other key freshman I knew it was only because she let them and my curiosity as to why was now too much to bear. It helped that it also happened to be the one runner that I happened to secretly kiss a few months ago on this very same field. Even the memory still brought a flush to my cheeks.

“Sorry I didn’t mean to startle you. I was just curious as to why you let them pass you.”

Scratching her head nervously Amy looked from me to the field her lips growing into a small smile as she did so.

“Ah~ you noticed that? Are you a fan of the team?” she asked avoiding answering.

Hiding the blush that struggled to my face I nodded my head slightly, “You could say that, My name’s Mia, Mia Angel.”

Amy seemed to test the name on her lips as she repeated it and smiled her brown eyes dazzling as they focused on my face.

“Nice to meet you Mia, I’m Amy Mason. You a freshman too…?”

I nodded my head, trying to pretend I didn’t know who she was and that we didn’t have at least four classes together.

“So you done avoiding the answer?” I asked smiling deviously .

Amy blushed as she laughed, “I’m caught out, aren’t I? Well it’s not much of a good reason but I kind of do it to keep their spirits up and,” her blush deepened, “to keep coach from giving me too much preference.”

I raise my eyebrows curiously scanning her face, “But isn’t that unfair to you?”

Amy looked back in surprise, “Well… I guess I haven’t thought about that…”

I furrowed my brow, “But you’ve thought it’s okay to lie to your team mates?”

“A little white lie for their own good, trust me.” she emphasized. The look on her face darkened for a bit as she looked over to the practicing runners.

Tilting my head I looked from them to hear, “But what about tournaments and stuff like that?”

Amy sighed heavily as she looked to the field, “I’ll avoid them if I can,” turning to me, she smiled brightly, “but if I can’t, I’ll run like there’s no one watching!”

“Not a fan of the spot light?” I queried.

Laughing she smiled embarrassed, “That obvious?”

I nodded my head and we both burst out laughing. As our laughter died down I noticed Amy’s gaze travel to the tracks.

“Besides, I couldn’t lie when you’re running seriously like they do for races. It’s too big a lie and I hate lies like that.”

I smiled as I watched her get lost in thought gazing at the tracks lovingly.
