“If you keep staring at me, I’ll start thinking you bat for the other side….”

I watched as Michael’s eyes focused on me, my words barely having any effect on him. Mia leaned over from her chair and onto my desk. The faint sent of lilies filling my nose. It took everything I had not to drop my head into her neck and inhale her scent.

“That would make sense though, wouldn’t it?” Mia said teasingly, “I mean, with the amount of girlfriends you go through in a month….” She trailed off suggestively. A shiver ran through me for a second as I felt a chill in the tension that suddenly seemed to come from Mia, “I say that sounds like denial.”

I turned to look at her in surprise, but the feeling vanished as quickly as it had come and she was back in her seat, just watching her sidetracked brother from a distance. Before I could ask her what was troubling her, Michael finally broke his silence.

“Why did you tell Trish about Saturday?”

I stared back at him in surprise, shifting slightly in my seat. Was he oblivious?

“Dude, I think your sister just called you gay.”

It was as if he snapped out of a daze and only now remembered Mia was sitting next to us. I felt a spark of anger, but pushed it down as he looked towards her apologetically before returning a more intense gaze towards me.

“I’ll deal with her later. I want to know why you told Trish Braker about the carnival date.”

Michael’s tone was stern. A wave of guilt began edging closer as I looked at him curiously.

“I told her because she asked.”

Michael sighed in exasperation. Turning to Mia for some form of understanding, I found myself met with a blank expression as she watched us.

“Randy, sometimes you’re an idiot.”

“What the hell I do?” I asked incredulously. Michael looked at me, dumbfounded.

“You can’t seriously be asking that?”

Narrowing my eyes and nodding my head, I sighed, but as I tried to follow Michael, my eyes kept sliding to the corner, searching Mia’s face in apprehension.

Michael groaned frustrated.

“Do you have any idea what torture I had to go through during lunch?”

Looking at him hesitantly, reluctant to take my eyes off Mia, I watched as Michael wiped his face in weariness.

“Must have been tough… taking all those rejections from Amy.”

His glare was a mix of surprise and annoyance. I shrugged, “What? She doesn’t strike me as the type to change her mind so easily and going from the ten times she turned you down before lunch, I can only assume the number increased.”

Michael glared my way, the intensity of his gaze drilling a hole on the side of my face.

“For your information, Amy IS going to be at the carnival this Saturday… the only problem is that Trish will be tagging along.”
