I could feel the glare the whole ride to the party, annoyed and angry with maybe a hint of worry. If ever there was a contest for who had the most expressive glare, Trish would no doubt win hands down. As we got to the two-story stone brick house I could feel the painkillers wearing off.

This is a bad idea…

But I couldn’t back out now, a promise was a promise and I was pretty sure Trish wouldn’t take me breaking this promise tonight very well, not after I had been a no show for lunch.

The car came to an abrupt stop in front of the gates that would lead us to the party. I glanced over to Trish as she pulled the handbrake up and exited the driver’s side, mumbling a string of swear words.

Yip…. still angry.

I sighed as I slowly exited from the passenger side, wincing as I put pressure on my left leg. Once I was out of the car and facing the house, I was aware of a minor throbbing starting at the back of my neck. Trish stood before me, her eyes focused on me. Now as I looked at her, I could see concern in the depths of her eyes as she assessed me.

“You sure you still wanna do this?” she asked softly. I smiled as I caught a glimpse of the old Trish staring back at me. Straightening up, making sure I looked completely fine, I threw my arm around her neck and started towards the house, gritting my teeth against the pain that raced through my body.

“Of course I am! I promised, didn’t I?”

Trish was quiet for a while as we walked closer to the noisy house. Just as we reached the porch, I felt her shoulders square and then suddenly I was being crushed in an unexpected hug. Before I could say or do anything, she moved away from me, her grin almost splitting her face.

“Okay great!” looking me up and down, she gave a snort of disapproval, “you could have at least dressed up a little…”

My eyes narrowed in her direction. “Don’t push it Trish.”

Grabbing my arm in excitement, that I did not feel as a sharp spasm raced up my elbow, Trish turned to me, her eyes all innocent and round, her mouth pouting in a way I knew many guys went crazy over.

“Sorry Amy, don’t be mad ‘kay? Anyway, with your leg like that, heels wouldn’t have been a good idea anyway...” with that I was ushered into the house where the party was already in full swing.

Trish pulled me to the drinks table, waving at every face that turned our way.  I tried my best to smile as if I was having the time of my life. We weren’t at the table long before a tall, muscularly dark-skinned guy began to approach us. He seemed familiar, but my mind came up blank. It was only when Trish began fixing her hair and makeup that bells started ringing.

“Trevor….”

Trevor Wayne nodded his greeting as he reached the table, his eyes being drawn like magnets to Trish’s overly exposed cleavage.

“Sup’ Amy… Trish, what you guys doing here all sober and shit?”

“Can’t drink….” I replied flatly. Amy gave me a sharp look before turning on that pout for the big guy,

“Naw~ we just got here and haven’t had a chance to start yet.”

Trevor grabbed two plastic cups from the table and handed them to us.
