"Can't believe she actually showed up?" One of the runners scoffed, her voice breaking through my concentration as I moved through my meditative stretches.
"Yeah...doesn't look like they're fighting though." Another girl commented curiously, her voice lower. Something nagged at the back of my head as they spoke but I fought against the temptation to look as I pushed through the last few stretches I had to complete.
"Maybe twins fight differently, who knows?"
My head snapped up at the mention of the words 'twins'. In all of our school there were only on set of twins that anyone cared to talk about and that was the Angel twins. Turning to look at the girls who stood gossiping at my right I caught one of them looking my way as she finished up her own stretches. Blushing furiously she looked away while the other one still looked off into the distance. Following her gaze, I found myself turning to the bleachers.
Before I could spot anything though, Trish's legs caught me by surprise as she walked up to me and blocked my view as she bent down. Her face now level with mine she smiled that forced smile she had been giving me the past few days that keep sending a stab of guilt into my gut as I knew I was the one who put it there.
"Stay in that stretch any longer and I'm going to have to buy you a leash..." she joked lightly.
"Woof~," I replied playfully, "that doesn't sound too bad actually."
A genuine smile crawled across her lips as she shook her head and stood up. Joining her I shook out my limbs as I looked for the two gossiping girls, but to my dismay both girls had vanished.
"So you ready for this?" Trish asked seriously.
I could tell by the look in her eyes she wasn't talking about the race.
"The basketball game only starts after the race and ends in the evening. So there's no-"
"-rush? So you want to drag this out the whole day?" Trish interrupted, her eyes drilling into me.
Looking away I walked towards the starting line where the rest of the racers were slowly gathering. Trish sighed heavily as she followed behind.
"Amy...look, I don't want to say that's a bad idea but- it's sounds like a bad idea."
I narrowed my eyes as I looked to her, "How exactly do you figure that?"
Placing her hand on my arm, Trish looked seriously into my eyes as we slowed our pace. Her voice was soft as she spoke.
"Because I know you," pulling me to a stop Trish she continued, "you've been pining over this for so long that you could probably argue yourself out of it for another day."
Shuffling my feet nervously I struggled to make eye contact with her as I spotted a few other members of the track team start to take note of us.
"Would that be such a bad thing?"
Pinching my arm, Trish forced my eyes back on her as she scowled in irritation.
"Yes it would! What happened to 'crazy in love'?" she fumed.
I flinched as I grinned sheepishly remembering my own words spoken just recently. Thinking about that moment on the porch and now on the field when things were so close to being a reality felt so different. Discovering Mia had somehow been the source of the rumor had fuelled many things in me, most of which had been my desire to confess to her, of that I was certain. But now, standing on the field on the day Trish had suggested I do the confessing, I felt scared and completely out of my depth.
