“Heads up…!” Kane yelled, watching in horror as a distracted Michael continued to sit idly drumming his fingers as he stared off into the distance.
Michael casually swatted the ball away and continued staring towards the crowds of students lying lazily under the sun. I caught the ball seconds before it smacked me in the face. I looked up to see Kane and Gary running up towards us, their faces knit in concern as they pointed over to Michael.
“Hey watch it- that was nearly my face.” I grumbled irritably trying to wipe the water that had spilt all over my history assignment. Kane smiled apologetically as he grabbed the rest of the water and finished it off.
“Sorry man didn’t think this idiot was so out of it.” He explained, looking to Michael quizzically.
“What’s with him?” Gary queried, grabbing the ball as he leaned against my shoulder.
We looked in the direction Michael’s distant gaze ran off to. There was nothing but a group of cheerleaders and drama queens lounging in the sun as they chattered away. Glancing curiously to each other, we each shrugged our shoulders.
“Beats me….” I trailed off, an edge to my voice. I still wasn’t exactly good with Michael after Saturday and it didn’t help that the guy seemed to be avoiding me ever since school started.
“He’s probably scoping out a rebound.” Kane offered his eyes going back to inspect the long glistening legs of the cheerleaders that soaked in the sun.
Gary lifted his eyebrows in surprise as he looked to Michael, “Whoa, not even Prince Charming had a chance? Damn, looks like our Goddess is a heartless b-“
“Watch it Turner.” Michael grunted warningly as he leaned over the table to grab a page from my notebook.
“What? I was gonna say beauty,” he yelled, backing away from the table and Michael’s icy glare as he threw is hands up in surrender.
“And stop getting your hopes up. I haven’t been dumped… yet.” Michael carried on, ignoring Gary as he began scribbling onto the back of my homework assignment.
“Firstly, that’s my homework man- not cool,” I grabbed the page before throwing Michael with a crumbled up blank page. I relished the direct hit to the forehead, “and lastly, you can’t’ be dumped by someone who you aren’t even dating.”
I could feel Kane looking between us, an odd look on his face as he probably felt the tension, but I ignored him. Looking to the scribbling behind my essay, I saw three unfinished names that belonged to three of the girls we had assumed Michael to be checking out earlier.
“Dude, why were you listing the cheerleader’s names behind my homework?” I asked, genuinely curious.
Kane and Gary moved closer to me as they craned their necks to read the names.
“Melissa, Wendy, Maggie- Yo bro, these are the gossip divas. I thought you hated them?” Kane exclaimed in surprise as he stood up. I nodded my head unconsciously. Michael never like the gossip girls of Tailor high and to be honest I was surprised Michael even knew the girls names.
Michael’s face was thoughtful as he turned back to the group sprayed across the grass.
“I’m thinking they’re probably the ones I need right now…” Michael explained as he wrote their names down again. I exchanged a surprised look with Kane as we turned back to the cheerleaders. One of the girls was now looking in our direction and it was clear that our observations of them were being noted. A shiver ran down my spine at the thought, it was not a good thing having the gossip queen’s attention.
