I watched as Trish and Amy stood reluctantly in front of the lab. Miss Fairway’s glare drilled into the two latecomers as she mumbled away her lecture on punctuality and priority, ironically eating away her own class time. I couldn’t help but notice the cute way Trish tilted her head as she ignored most of what the teacher said as her eyes strayed across the class room. It wasn’t long before our eyes locked and I winked secretively in her direction. Blushing for a microsecond she grimaced before turning her attention back to Miss Fairway, her body stiffening.

I grinned as I kept looking in her direction; sure she was fully aware of my attention. Despite my efforts however, it wasn’t long before I found myself glancing towards Amy. To my surprise I found her hooded gaze scanning the immediate area around me. Whether it was because I know knew the truth or because of what happened last night, I found myself more wary of Amy’s actions. To my surprise I found her actions pretty obvious as she looked for my sister.

Watching her I became curious as I thought back to all the times I had caught her looking my way. Had she always been so obvious in searching for Mia?

“…are you listening Michael?” Kane called punching me in the arm.

I turned to him, though my eyes still lingered on the two up front.

“Yeah-sorry, I heard you.”

Kane sighed irritably as he leaned over my shoulder, balancing on the empty chair next to me.

“Really now?” he asked mockingly, “I could have sworn you were preoccupied with staring at those two over there being ripped a new one.”

I glanced out the corner of my eye.

“I can multi-task.” I stated, the warning clear in my tone.

Kane scoffed at that as he pulled back, “Since when?”

Ignoring his grumblings I turned back to see Amy was now talking to Miss Fairway. Trish fought to keep her face straight, but I could see her lips curve deviously as she watched Amy in approval. My feet ached to move forward so I could hear their conversation.

“So, what are we going to do now?” Kane asked irritably as he finally took the empty seat next to me.

“About what..?” I mumbled distracted, trying to read Amy’s lips.

“I told you- Duke gave me nothing,” Kane breathed in exasperation.

“I could have told you that would happen.” I commented.

Kane swore under his breath as he stretched across the table.

“But if you ask me that punk definitely knows something,” he protested, “probably even started the rumor.” he added irritably.

“I doubt it.” I answered evasively, reluctantly recalling my own questioning of Duke McKinley.

Kane looked to me suspiciously, raising an eyebrow as he scanned my face.

“And why do you think that?”

Shrugging my shoulders I looked to Kane seriously, “What would he gain from starting it? Think about it.”

Kane’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment before he clicked his tongue in annoyance. I could tell that Duke had really gotten under his skin and briefly wondered what exactly had happened between the two.
