Being the nice guy sucked… big time. Even as I walked up to the edge of the field the thought resonated deeply in my bones and I couldn’t help but grit my teeth against the irritation that churned within my chest as I turned the thought over and over in my gut.

Looking across the field I saw that only one runner remained on the track sprinting along the edge like she was on some mission to win the Olympics. Amy’s concentration was fixed as she zoned in on nothing but the track in front of her, oblivious to my existence. It gave me enough time to observe the girl that had been the unintentional cause of my broken heart.

I flinched as the thought crossed my mind, stabbing me in the chest as I recalled Mia’s face as she ran from the science lab after I had accidently ‘outed’ her. I could still see the wide-eyed shock on her face as she realised I had pieced together the seemingly random pieces of the puzzle and guessed at her feelings for Amy.

It still amazed me that a random guess had turned out to be right when all I had been doing was making a passing remark on a past conversation with the distracted runner before me. Shaking my head I tried to focus my attention on the fluid movement of the athlete in front of me. I couldn’t deny how much I appreciated the view her running outfit gave as it moulded to her body while she ran. From a physical aspect I could totally see what Michael & Mia saw in Amy, it was basically what all the other guys, and apparently girls, saw. But despite the obvious traits I knew Mia wasn’t as vain as her brother. There was definitely more to it than just looks for Mia.

Trying to scan her face from afar, I caught Amy’s distracted gaze for a brief moment, as I tried to see what it was that Mia Angel saw in her. Amy doubled back as she shook from her daze taking note of my presence for the first time.

“Randy? What are you doing here?” Amy asked glancing to the basketball courts as she did so.

I grinned knowingly as I scratched my head, trying to figure out how I was going to play this out.

“Hey Amy… doing some extra laps for the festival?” I observed gesturing to the empty track.

Amy looked slightly surprised as she looked around taking in the empty grounds. Turning back to me she smiled awkwardly as she scratched her head coming to a stop in front of me.

“You could say that…” she murmured, “no extra drills today?”

Shaking my head I turned to follow as she made her way towards the benches that lined the outside of the track.

“The Captain’s giving us a break before the big game.”

Amy turned to look at me, her eyebrow raised in suspicion, “Really? That doesn’t sound like Michael.”

I flinched as she caught me out, but covered the movement up with a laugh as I grinned her way.

“He’s not as bad as you think he is, you know.”

I could tell she didn’t buy it, but Amy kept quiet as she grabbed a bottle of water from her duffel bag and drank from it letting the moment pass, a strange look on her face.

I couldn't help noting how distracted she was as she drank from the bottle. I wondered again how long she had actually been on the track running away with her thoughts.
