“I can’t take it anymore!”

Duke moaned startling me out of my thoughts. Turning around I watched as he walked through the empty classroom towards me. His face set in an irritated scowl as he massaged his temples, his eyes squeezed shut. Before I could say anything my attention shifted back out the window as I heard the distant whistle that signalled the start of the track team’s practice run.

Stopping at the desk next to me, Duke sighed audibly as he peered sideways in my direction, noting the scene out the window that held my attention.

“I blame you, you know…” he mumbled slowly as he leaned against the desk, “all these idiots with their unrequited feelings hounding me- it’s definitely your fault.”

“What’s eating you?” I asked, still distracted as I watched Amy overtake the last three runners who had mistakenly thought themselves lucky by the star athlete’s late start-up. I smiled as I watched her lead the group, even distracted she seemed to own the track.

“You mean aside from the fact that you haven’t told you’re brother the truth yet?”

I turned to him in surprise and caught him staring at me curiously. Shaking his head, he sighed irritably and scratched his head. As he did so, I saw a red bruise line his wrist. Before I could say anything he turned to me, his expression irritable as he spoke.

“Kane came to speak to me, wanted to know what I knew about the rumour,” a small smile lifted his lips as he seemed to recall something, “the smartass even accused me of starting it… which isn’t entirely a stretch from the truth I guess.”

“And you didn’t say anything.” I said evenly, reading his expression.

Duke stared at me a long time before smiling in annoyance, “So confident… but yes, I didn’t.”

Lifting the camera around his neck he raised the lens to the field and began zooming in on one of the runners.

“So… are you going to tell me why you didn’t tell your brother about how the rumour started?”

I cringed as he said the words. Glancing out the corner of my eye, I watched as he waited for my response.

“Technically I didn’t start that rumour…” I said.

Duke scoffed at that, “Don’t even try Mia, even if I did most of the leg work, the idea was all yours honey.”

Shaking my head in defeat I breathed out under my breath, “Fine, I give… I still can’t believe such a stupid accident-whatever.”

“Now why can’t you admit that to your brother so easily…?” Duke asked curiously

Turning to look away I focused my attention on the lead runner as she passed the finish line, barely any sign of exertion on her face as she moved to ready herself  for the next round of practice while the others struggled to keep up.

“It’s complicated.”

The sound of clicking drew my attention to Duke as he snapped some photographs of Amy on the track.

“It sounds to me like the only complicated thing here is having Michael understand how much Amy means to you-”

“He already knows.” I interrupted avoiding the surprised gaze Duke shot in my direction.
