“No fucking way.”

Looking up I watched as Trish stared in disbelief as she walked up her driveway. It was clear from her expression she wasn’t pleased to see me.

“Hello to you too,” I said dryly, not in the greatest moods myself.

“Michael, what the hell are you doing in my driveway?” Trish asked coldly. Clearly I was not someone she wanted to see right now, thinking back to when I saw her earlier at the ice cream parlour with Amy, I became curious as to what might have happened between the two. Looking closer I realised even in the rain I could tell her eyes were slightly red. Noticing my inspection her eyes narrowed as she watched me suspiciously.

“What happened to you?” I asked curiously.

Her eyes still narrow she replied, voice deadpan, “I got rejected.”

“Whatev-” I began until I looked into her eyes and realized she was being dead serious. Taken aback I stared at her, speechless.

She shut her eyes mumbling irritably, “Pity from you is the last thing I need right now.”

Heading to her front door she turned to me, “So what do you want?”

Still stuck on what she had said I turned to face her, curiosity eating at me, “Who was it?” I asked, though the answer seemed to be written all over her face.

She laughed sarcastically, “How blind are you going to pretend to be?”

I didn’t waver, I had to be sure. Too much over the last few days, no the last few hours had been uncertain for me to make my own conclusions.

“I’ve always wondered… but I need to be sure.”

Trish shook her head, mumbling under her breath, almost too inaudible for me to hear.

“Just fucking perfect…of all people,” she looked to me, as if contemplating whether or not to throw me off her driveway by force or not. But something weighed in my favour. I didn’t know what it was but I was thankful for it.

“Amy did- are you happy now. Good bye.”

“I’m not done yet,” I yelled after her, running to catch up. She waved back.

“Well I am.”

Catching up to her on the porch I was forced to jam my foot in the door in order to get her attention.

“Come on Trish- hear me out!” I pleaded, ignoring the desperation in my voice.

Trish looked me over curiously, something in her expression softening as she listened to me. The look surprised me for a moment and I realized I had never seen such a vulnerable Trish before. In fact I doubted anybody ever really had.

“Just five minutes, give me that at least…”

Trish seemed to contemplate it for a moment, but I could tell I had already won her over as the pressure on my foot released. Opening the door fully she gestured for me to go inside, her face back to her usual firm control as she glared up at me.

“Five minutes, and then you’re gone playboy.”

I smiled thankfully stepping over the threshold into what looked like the entry way. Not sure where to go I turned back to her and found Trish locking the place up. By the look of things I could tell she was someone used to being alone. It wasn’t surprising, but it was still quite disturbing to see, especially when I was so used to having my parents around all the time.
