Mia turned sharply into the locker room, her shoulder knocking the edge of the wall and nearly toppling her off balance. I was slightly impressed at her quick recovery as she kept moving forward, the pain from the blow ignored in her rush to vanish inside the room. I stepped away from the pillar that hid me and looked in the direction she had come from. Judging from her expression I guessed something had happened somewhere near the school labs. Curiosity bubbled to the surface of my mind and I tried to remember where detention was being held today.

Pulling out my phone I dialled the familiar number my fingers already knew by heart. The cold metal sent chills against my ear as I pressed it close and waited for the ringing to stop. The answering click seemed to echo all around me as I listened to the quiet breathing on the other end.

“Hey… where are you right now?” I asked, looking anxiously to the door that Mia had vanished into.

“On my way to the locker rooms, feel like running my legs off right now.” Amy responded, her voice sounding slightly off.

I frowned, wondering what could have changed her mood so drastically. The look on Mia’s face flashed passed me and panic gripped my stomach as a million scenarios played inside my head. Turning fully to the side that Mia had emerged from I focused on the end, trying to see signs of Amy’s approach.

“What happened?”

Amy sighed on the other end and I felt her reluctance over the receiver and knew Mia was somehow involved. It was the only thing she ever restrained from talking to me about.

“Detention was… draining.” She said dejectedly.

“Wanna go get some ice cream instead?” I asked slowly, killing off the anxiety that ate at my nerves.

Amy seemed to think it over as she hummed slightly, the idea at least somewhat appealing to her.

“You could run afterwards- there’s even tomorrow…?” I pressed.

“I guess…” she began, her voice wavering, “sure, why not? Where do you want to go?”

I smiled in relief, “The mall’s always a good bet. Maybe we could even try some shopping afterwards…?”

A groan echoed from her side, but I could tell she was smiling as she spoke.

“Don’t push it Trish,” she paused for a moment, “I was thinking maybe we could, you know…talk?”

I gripped the phone tighter, the smile on my face straining to keep in place, “Sure… I guess we could do that.”

“Great then- ah…” Amy stopped talking as she giggled softly into the phone, “Turn around.” She ordered.

I turned slowly and saw her standing on the other side of the doors that led to the locker rooms. She passed the last two steps as she descended the stairs that went up to the second floor. She dropped the phone as she looked from me to the locker room’s entrance. Shaking her head she smiled back at me.

“Should have guessed you’d know where to find me…” she mumbled.

“Always…” I replied, the smile relaxing on my face as I watched Amy walked towards me.

The sound of the showers coming on at full blast distracted us both and Amy’s eyes strayed to the doors curiously, checking her watched as she did so.
