I watched the bolt of lightning break through the clouds. The low rumble of the coming storm sent chills up my arm as I anticipated the smell of rain that would cover the track soon. I smiled as I pictured myself on the track, running under the rain as Mia watched.

Sighing I felt as the dreamy imaged faded back into the noisy crowd of families rushing around to try all the carnival rides they could get to before the rain came.

“Hey Trish, you think it’ll break soon?” I asked curiously scanning the dark clouds.

“We can only hope…” she mumbled turning from the old couple that stood in front of us.

“This is insane. I’m pretty sure those three drama queens weren’t in the front earlier.”

I looked to the front of line. It didn’t take long for me to notice the three girls, probably just a few years younger than us, cuddling up to two older men as they picked out the waffles they wanted.

“Relax, we’re almost there.” I reassured her as we watched the group collect their waffles and sway languidly away from the stand.

“Why didn’t I think of that..?” Trish mumbled aloud as she pulled my arm forward in the queue.

“Maybe …because, you’re not a drama queen…?” I offered quizzically. Trish smiled at me endearingly, wrapping her arm around my neck affectionately.

They made it to the front of the queue. I turned to the park’s hill where we had last seen the boys standing. It took a while for me to realize that Michael was covered by a tree next to where Randy sat looking up at the sky.

“What the hell is Michael doing?” Trish asked as she stepped away from the waffle chef as he set out to complete the order.

“Who knows…?” I responded uninterested.

As if aware of our gaze, Randy turned to look at them. I raised my arm in a halfhearted wave. After a bit of hesitation Randy returned the wave awkwardly. Michael remained hidden behind the tree.

“You seem to get along pretty well with Randy, why is that?” Trish queried curiously turning to Amy.

I raised my eyebrow in surprise at the observation, “I do?”

Trish nodded slowly, examining my face carefully.

I thought about the many little conversations me and Randy had had while Trish and Michael had busied themselves with the rides.

“I guess so,” looking back to Randy who had returned his attention to the skies I smiled sadly, “I suppose we just have something in common.”

I recalled the way he had spoken about his first encounter with Mia. His tone had been filled with affection as his face etched with longing. Even his attempts to hide his feelings had made it all the more obvious.

I felt my heart ache in envy of describing the same thing to someone else, but what hurt more was that it happened to be the same person. I had unwillingly discovered that Randy’s feelings were just as real as mine were and I now found myself unable to fully dislike the guy. After all, who knew better than me, how Mia Angel was impossible to resist.

“Really…?” Trish mused, her eyes turning a shade darker.

“Order’s up!” The waffle chef called, holding up four bags that smelled deliciously sweet.

Grabbing the bags we began to make our way to where the boys waited. i had the strange feeling that Trish’s mood had somehow changed drastically. By the genuinely happy smile that she directed at a confused Randy, A small part of me became curious about the sudden change.

Michael moved away from the tree and sidestepped Trish as he made his way to my side and grabbed one of the bags I held.

“Smells good!” he exclaimed sniffing the contents.

I caught the snicker that Randy tried to hide as he took the bag Trish offered him.

“Thanks. So you guys ready to move to the next ride?” He asked after taking a bite of the warm waffle.

I looked to the sky, unable to deny the call for rain that hummed in the back of my head.

“You think that’s a good idea? I think the rain’s going to be here soon.”

“You worry too much!” Michael exclaimed, stealthily throwing his arm around my shoulders.

“She does, doesn’t she?” Trish agreed, grabbing his hand and dragging him towards one of the rides.

“Let’s go, shall we?” she chirped, pulling a reluctant Michael who knew better than to shake out of Trish’s grip.

I stood next to Randy as we laughed at the sight.

“You know, I never realized Trish could be so protective…” Randy said in awe as they followed the other two.

“Yeah, well I don’t think your friend’s reputation helps him where she’s concerned.” I stated dryly.

“And where you’re concerned..?” Randy probed curiously.

“It’s been my experience that people tend to be more than what others have to say about them.”

I took the last bite of my waffle, relishing the sweet dessert, “Wouldn’t you agree?”

I could feel Randy’s gaze as he took in my words. Before he could respond Trish was at my side pulling me next to where Michael sat. He seemed to be a mixture of confused and excited as I was directed next to him. Trish moved to the row behind them taking a seat next to Randy, that strange smile still covering her lips.

“So are you having fun?” Michael asked moving uncomfortably closer to me.

“Are you?” I deflected grateful that the rides safety harness didn’t allow him to move any closer.

Michael smiled happily as he watched me, “I am now.”

I returned the smile awkwardly bracing for the plunge as the ride began to move forward.
