I stared in disbelief as Mia Angel made her way into the locker room and headed my way.

Too soon… too soon…

I felt my heart begin to race as I recalled Cassidy’s words yesterday and I wondered if the little devil had conspired somehow with universe to get this meeting out the way as soon as possible. Turning my head I stared back into my locker and tried to find the perfect way to start the conversation. The darkness stared back at me giving me nothing. The sound of Mia’s footsteps echoed deep inside my ear drums reminding me that I was ignoring the last person on earth that I wanted to ignore so I turned and hoped for the best.

“Hey…” I said my voice cracking lightly.

“Hi,” Mia smiled back making my heart skip a beat, “coming in from practice?” she asked.

Still reeling from the mere sound of her voice I nodded dumbly as I tried to remember what it was I wanted in my locker again as my hands fumbled about.

“Wow… coach is really pushing you guys for the festival huh!?” Mia carried on. Was that a hint of nervousness in her voice or was it just lack of oxygen to my brain because I’d forgotten how to breath, I couldn’t tell.

“Yeah... thankfully the weather’s not sucking.” yay, I’d gotten a sentence out.

Silence filled the air between us, a strange awkward feel creeping into it that nearly had me believing in fairytales.

“Hey Amy,” Mia called softly.

“Yeah…?” I responded way too quickly.

Laughing lightly Mia turned to me slowly, her eyes seemingly struggling to focus on my face.

“About my brother-’

Before she could say anything more her face fell as the sound of footsteps echoed into the locker room behind me and new voices, unwelcomed ones, entered the area. My mood fell and not just because Mia had mention her brother as I recognized the owner of one of the voices.

“Well look who we have here,” Laura Soe crooned slowly, her voice scratching against the insides of my ear drums, “were you actually doing any physical sports Mia or are you just here to watch the rest of us showering?”

I turned to face the group of girls that had entered the locker room. Laura’s gaze raked across from Mia over to me as she boldly stood her ground, surprising me somewhat. The girl clearly either had a death wish or somehow finally grew a back bone in the last few weeks since her last attempt at messing with Mia in front of me.

Meg and Gale shuffled their feet as they watched me and exchanged glances quickly becoming uncomfortable with whatever plan it was they had had before they had come into the locker rooms. Laura on the other hand seemed unfazed as she locked eyes with me and smiled as if I, and not Mia, was her intended target gaining my curiosity a little.

“Hey Amy nice form out there, I guess the leg must be all healed up huh?”

My eyes narrowed as she referenced my injury from saving Mia, “Yeah, I’m all fixed up,” I replied as coolly as I could, “legs and arms too,” I emphasized.

Turning away from her gaze I grabbed what I hoped was my towel from my locker and turned towards the showers.

“Now if you guys don’t mind I’d like to go have a nice and peaceful shower.”
