The sound of the tires hitting the road rang in my ears. I waited for the sound to grow more distant before going back to the window. It was too late to catch a final glimpse of the car before it vanished around the corner. I grabbed my journal off the window ledge, still keeping my eyes on the front lawn where Trish had been standing.
I grit my teeth as I watched the grass in annoyance. Part of me was glad that Trish hadn’t made it into the house, but another part ached at the lost opportunity of having Amy in such close proximity. As I stood looking longingly in the distance the phone rang, startling me from my thoughts. I reached for it and answered, not bothering to check the caller ID.
“Hello…?”
There was a pause on the other end of the line before a soft voice seemed exhaled in relief.
“Aah… Mia! I’m so glad I caught you before you left with your brother!” the voice rang out, “Is everyone there already?”
I sighed recognising the owner of the worried tone immediately,
“Hey mom,” I began, “…Michael’s left with everyone already.”
“What..? I thought you were going with them.” Her voice echoed in concern. Before she could go on I cleared my throat and coughed a little,
“Not feeling too great, thought I'd stay in and rest a little…” I mumbled. There was silence on the other end and I wondered if she bought my act.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay alone though…” she questioned hesitantly. I smiled triumphantly,
“Definitely, so don’t worry about me!” I tried to stifle the victory from my tone.
“Fine then,” she sounded unconvinced, “but be safe, okay?” she relented. I hummed my reply and coughed for a little bit of extra reinforcement before ending the call.
Returning to my window seat, I tried getting my focus back into my diary. Looking at the blank page for a few minutes, I tried to remember where it was that I had stopped writing before catching sight of Trisha staring up at the house. I recalled the dark look on her face as she scanned the windows, no doubt in search of my room. At the time I had every intention of meeting her gaze in order to dissuade her from coming into the house, but on seeing Amy walk up to her side I had side stepped out of view in order to observe them from further inside my room.
Seeing Amy had drawn my mind into a blank, but what had been worse was the seething jealous that had eaten at my insides as I watched her join Trish for a moment before heading for the front door. I shook my head in an attempt to banish the memory but even as I tried to scan the words in my journal, all my mind took in was the image of Amy next to Trish.
After a few minutes of staring at blank pages, I decided to give up and let the images dominate my mind, allowing the various emotions to assault me as the memory replayed itself in my head over and over again.
“This is crazy…” I mumbled to myself as I huffed in defeat, closing my journal and allowing my eyes to stray back to the front yard. I felt nostalgic as I recognized the familiar feeling of irritation that began seeping into my veins and I was reminded of another time that I had been plagued by Trish’s face, only that time it had been much closer to my own in a very unwanted situation.
The distant memory hit me like a bucket of ice, causing a string of profanity to spill under my breath. The dreadful moment still hovered too close to the surface of my mind for comfort and I found myself clenching my fists as I imagined punching Trish off me before her assault.
