I pushed the curtain further out the way. Scanning the athletic fields below, I already spotted three students who would be looking for me before the day was done. Turning to the track course I was surprised to see that Amy was nowhere in sight, despite the skeleton team that Coach Wicker had running drills.

While still focused on the fields below, I quickly became aware of a lone figure behind me as the door to the nurses office crashed open.

“Mom wants you to come to dinner.”

Randy strolled lazily into the room, glancing briefly to the used bed in the corner. My little brother moved with ease into the room, leaving the door ajar as he looked up with a charming smile. I shook my head in irritation as I glared at him.

“You could at least knock…” I chided.

He grinned playfully, “and when have I ever?”

Moving away from the window, I took a seat at my neatly arranged desk.

“So, you coming or what…?” Randy uttered distractedly, stifling a yawn. He jumped onto the ruffled bed and stretched himself out as he made himself comfortable.

“Why aren’t you getting enough sleep, another tournament?” I asked curiously examining the dark circles under his eyes. I tried to remember the name of the online game he was currently playing, but nothing came to mind.

“At some point I’m gonna need an answer sis.” Randy said, grinning defiantly as his eyes slowly began to close.

Swiveling the chair around, I sighed heavily and leaned further back into the uncomfortable desk chair. I could feel Randy’s searching eyes watching me.

“So what’s the special occasion?” I asked after a few short squeaky rotations.

“She’s worried about you, shouldn’t she be?” Randy answered evenly. I could tell that he wasn’t just referring to our mother. Rising from the chair I grabbed the stethoscope and moved to the bed, cautioning Randy to stay down.

“How have you been kiddo?” I diverted.

“I’m alive, aren’t I?” he replied lazily.

Smacking his head I began to examine him, “Don’t be a smartass!”

Randy laughed as he watched me work. “Well, if you must know… I went on a double date this weekend with Michael.”

The stethoscope hovered above his broad chest as I look to him in surprise, “…and Mia?” I asked hesitantly.

His sad expression answered for him as he looked away from my probing gaze.

“Unfortunately she had better things to do…” he grumbled low, “It was with Amy and Trish.”

“Really…? Well that’s interesting…” I stated pressing the stethoscope against his skin as I continued my examination.

“Oh, you can say that again. We went to the carnival on Saturday, only to be washed out two hours in.” Randy explained his tone littered in amusement again.

“I did get to see Mia though…” Randy’s face reddened significantly, causing me to raise my eyebrows suspiciously. Randy rarely blushed.

“There was a situation… I kinda saw her as she left the shower…. in nothing but a towel.”
