The light streaming from the crack at the bottom of the door went out. It wasn’t long before the sound of the outside door closing followed. I kept my eyes trained of the dark roof above me, the pressure on my stomach forgotten as I tried to understand what I had just overheard.

“I think they’re gone...” Duke whispered, leaning closer to my face to ensure I heard him.

Lean arms rested on each side of me, pinning my arms to my side, though the strength in them had long since gone. Duke looked down on me, concern creasing his face as it replaced the irritating teasing from earlier. A small part of my brain registered that the deceptively strong nerd still straddled my waist, though I couldn’t find the anger I had had when he had jumped me earlier.

“Are you okay?” Duke asked seriously scanning my face.

“Get off me.” I said clearly, the ice in my voice sparking fear in his eyes.

As Duke scrambled off of me, I slowly raised myself off the floor thinking about the actions that had led to me pinned beneath the blonde who stood watching me suspiciously.

“You aren’t dating Mia… are you?” I asked evenly, already knowing the answer as I recalled Duke’s confession to wanting to take me on the floor after he had pulled me from the door when Randy and Mia had entered the classroom. Though our precarious position had been pretty enjoyable to Duke, it had turned out pretty clarifying to me, especially as we listened silently to the bits of conversation between Mia and Randy that leaked through the door.

Duke shook his head as he returned to the chair I had found him sitting at. Picking up the spoiled photograph from the tray of chemicals he blew at the page in annoyance.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you dumbass,” he glanced at me playfully wiggling his eyebrows as he looked to the floor, “if you haven’t noticed- I have some pretty skew tastes.”

Clenching my jaw against the reminder, I narrowed my eyes as I glared at the arrogant photographer, “Then what the hell have you and Mia been doing all this time?”

Duke looked to me in disbelief, his mouth twisting in a sardonic smile.

“We’re allowed to be friends, aren’t we?” scraping his eyes over my body before turning back to his photos he sneered loudly, “Not all of us guys just want sex from the opposite sex, you know.”

Tilting his head thoughtfully he looked back to me, raising his eyebrows curiously, “Considering what we just heard, I’m pretty sure things should be obvious now, don’t you think?”

Glaring his way, I turned my head to the door, the scent of chemicals beginning to make me dizzy. Despite hearing the majority of what the two had said outside in the science lab, I still wasn’t too sure what it was that I had heard. I knew Randy had finally gotten the balls to confess and that Mia had turned him down, something that hadn’t exactly been a surprise to me… the rest of it seemed slightly more complicated than that and my brain was having a hard time trying to make sense of it.

“All I heard was my sister rejecting my best friend.” I said slowly.

Duke laughed as he dropped another spoiled photograph, “I’m beginning to get which one of you is the smarter twin….” Turning from his ruined batch of photos Duke scanned my face, “look, I’m more your sister’s friend and frankly- even if I want to screw you- I don’t exactly like you, got that Mr. everyone-should-worship-me?”
