“What are you doing?” I asked irritated. I watched as Michael seemingly tried to become one with the tree in his efforts to hide behind it.

Michael looked to me, his face deceptively innocent, “Nothing…”

I continued to watch as Michael molded himself to the shape of the tree. Scanning his face curiously, I asked skeptically, “Really now?”

I gestured to the steady growth of onlookers, who stared curiously in our direction. Some of the couples seemed to find the stunt hilarious, while others watched him suspiciously, keeping their kids closer.

“Well could you stop, you’re creeping some of the mom’s out.”

Michael glanced indifferently towards some of the women who dragged their kids further away from us. I watched as Michael let loose his charming smile, but even that only made him seem more suspect.  I shook my head at the few women who had suddenly moved closer to where we stood. The girls were promptly dragged away by their fathers and boyfriends. Smiling triumphantly, Michael turned his gaze from them to ensure he was once again one with the tree.

“That sucks and all, but I really don’t want to be in Trish’s line of sight right now.”

I looked to the bottom of the park’s hill, my eyes training on the waffle stand the girls had headed towards. I could just barely make out Amy and Trish standing in the middle of the line, neither of them where looking this way.

“They’re not looking here though…”

Michael scoffed, scratching his head in frustration as he peered around the trunk of the tree. He smiled at a few onlookers who waved to get his attention, but his tone was laced with irritation.

“Randy, I don't know about you, but I’m pretty sure that chick has eyes everywhere.”

I moved closer to the recently vacated bench under the tree. Taking the seat, I nodded my head in apology to the mother who scrambled off into the crowds. Her two toddlers were gathered closer to her as she shuffled away.

“What’s up dude, I thought you two were hitting it off pretty well?” I asked, turning my eyes upward to survey the dark skies curiously. The refreshing scent of ozone swept across my senses as I breathed in.

Michael looked to me frustrated, “It’s more like Trish is the touchy-feely type and it’s kinda freaking me out.”

Sighing heavily Michael leaned back against the tree. He rubbed his eyes roughly, “besides, it’s Amy I’m supposed to be ‘hitting it off’ with.”

“Come on, Trish can’t be that bad?” I exclaimed. The amusement was hard to mask as I recalled her grabbing the seat next to Michael on all three of the rides we had already been on. I couldn’t suppress the snorting laughter at the memory of Trish grabbing onto Michael as they endured the rough waves from the Carnival’s boat ride.

Michael sneered at that,” You can talk. She’s barely touched, let alone talked, to you.”

His blue orbs turned steely as they came to focus on my face. The intensity of the glare quickly became uncomfortable.

“But, it looks like Amy and you seem to be doing nothing but talking and enjoying each other’s company.” He growled low while his face darkened.

I raised his hands in defense as I met Michael’s cold gaze, “Geez, relax will you. Are you forgetting that you had to practically drag me along here?”

I stared him down warningly. Despite my best attempts I could still feel the heavy disappointment as I thought of Mia and what she was doing. It took a while for Michael’s stubborn gaze to soften as he shook his head wearily.

“Sorry man. I think this date’s taking it out of me….”

I laughed as I examined Michael’s pained expression, “It’s barely been two hours!”

Michael looked impatiently at his watch, “Well that’s two hours too long that I’ve spent with Trish Braker on a date.”

Snickering at that I watched as Michael looked up sharply, his cold glare cut me off before I could say anything.

“Hopefully, I can salvage things with Amy as the day goes.”

I shook my head as I leaned back against the bench. Looking back up at the sky, I caught sight of a lightning bolt streaking between the clouds. The dark sky lit up for a moment as the bolt passed.

“Well you better think of something quick. It looks like the carnival’s gonna be washed out soon.”

Michael looked firmly to the sky, “Nah… I’m sure it won’t break till at least this evening…”

I glanced towards Michael and noted that as determined as the guy sounded he seemed less confident as he scanned the skies that promised heavy showers.
