Apparently Remus favored Sirius most out of all his friends. But it was just that he knew Sirius too well and couldn't help not looking out for him.
Such as he knew Sirius got distracted and would leave the classroom without picking up his stuff, so he would be seen going around with two piles of parchments and books to and from class. If James or anyone else from his friends left their stuff in class, he would not pick it up at all.
He would also always open the packaging of the chocolate frog before he handed them to Sirius. So this special treatment he did to Sirius just because he knew he would be too distracted otherwise, made the rest of the friends think that Sirius was his favorite.

Remus got chocolate frogs for everyone. He hands James and Peter their frogs and then proceeds to open the next one out of its packaging and then put it in front of Sirius without saying a word. Sirius looks up from his homework that he's really behind on, smiles and eats it without a word.
This goes on for a while till it's the day after the full moon (boys don't know about Remus being a werewolf yet and Rem is in the infirmary). Sirius picks up the chocolate frog without a thought and suddenly feels the packaging in his mouth because it wasn't Remus who kept it there but James who has no idea that Remus does this for Sirius.
Sirius leaves the semi crushed chocolate frog on the table and rushes to the infirmary to check on his 'friend'.
