Dumbledore had personally approached Remus and asked him to fulfill the post of the Defense teacher at Hogwarts just like he had approached his parents and asked them to send him to Hogwarts years ago.
Remus always felt debted to Dumbledore for both these reasons. Because he was the only one who had given him an equal chance and not shunned him just because he was a werewolf.
