He secretly wrote articles on serious matters but with his writing style could turn a serious piece of pep talk into a hilarious script.
But he was not in favor of showing his talent to others so he kept it hidden from everyone (except the Marauders of course).

There was once a time that James was so intent on gaining Lily's attention that he dug out a particularly remarkable piece of writing from Remus's trunk and presented it to her under his name. And, well, poor James was quite disheartened when all his efforts went in vain and Lily didn't even spare him a glance of appreciation.
What he didn't know was, that most of the times Remus would ask Lily first for her feedback on what ever he wrote, then show it to the other Marauders.
