He was unnecessarily observant.
He had a habit to look around and take in his surroundings then remember it afterwards.
Mostly when standing on bus stations or walking down home (in the Summer break, of course) you could easily catch him counting the floors of a building or the number of windows a house had.
He had this habit of noticing the most unusual of things at the most unusual of times.

That is exactly why when he first visited Sirius at Grimmauld Place he had absolutely no trouble in finding out the Black Mansion.
He knew something was missing in between the two buildings and that was exactly why he rang the seemingly non-existent doorbell between the two Muggle apartment blocks to be met with Sirius as he opened the door grinning widely from ear to ear.
