He didn't particularly like children or rather was not very comfortable with them.

To others, this act of his seemed just like a sense of irritation from kids but in reality it was due to the fact that he feared if he ever hurt the precious little kid.

Despite his friends constantly reminding him the opposite, he always thought of children as fragile handled with care objects and always thought that he would somehow end up scaring them away. And that is why he kept his distance.

That is why when he first learnt of Tonks giving birth to Teddy he was scared because he feared what would happen if his son too was inflicted by the same curse that had a merciless hold on him.
