Remus kept his lycanthropy a secret from his friends and always came up with stories on his monthly disappearances as well as the scars on his face and arms.

He would tell them lies on how his mother was sick, how he had to go and visit her, how he got into a fight with some bullies near his house, how his cat scratched him and left scars all over or some such sort of stuff.

It was not until his second year at Hogwarts that he let them in on the secret.

And even that was because Sirius had worked it all out and confronted him when both were alone in the dorm.

Not having anything to hide any longer and being persuaded by Sirius that his lycanthropy mattered nothing to the three of them and could have no effect on their friendship, he finally told James and Peter the truth.

All of them accepted him for what he was and his friends vowed to make sure that he kept out of trouble and that no one else in the school found out his secret.
