The Wilds One Shot

When Shelby kissed you, you were too shocked to truly consider how you felt about her and women in general. You had always questioned if you did like girls, but you tried your best to put it to the back of your mind and not think about it, especially not when it involved your best friend. Shelby was from a very religious family and you always knew it was best to hold an air of caution, especially around her father who was more than happy to force his opinions onto others through his conversion therapy. You tried not to let it get in the way of your friendship though, and never voiced your thoughts about girls nor your disapproval of her family's beliefs.

You tried to talk to Shelby about the kiss, knowing that now your family and her own knew about it. You hoped that she would now feel comfortable enough to be honest with you and herself about whether she was interested in women but there was too much prejudice fed into her to be knocked away with just a kiss.

She threw every cruel word your way, trying to belittle you and force you to walk away from your friendship but you weren't going to back down so easily. Unlike her who would not be offered support by her family if she became open with her sexuality, your family were shocked, slightly disappointed but were willing to learn and adapt their minds to make sure you were happy in being who you were.

"I'm not just going to leave, Shelby," you said firmly. "I don't know what's going through your head, but you kissed me, and I liked it. I'm not going to pretend I didn't. I know you're trying to push me away and make me hate you as it will be easier for you to not have to face how you feel but I'm not letting you hide from who you are."

You could see her lip quiver as she tried to keep a brave face. She wished she could let her heart be true, but she was far too scared of what her father would do if he knew everything that she felt.

"I can't be friends with you," she whispered. "I'm not gay. It was a mistake and nothing like that would ever happen again."

You nodded your head. "I understand if you didn't mean it, if you don't actually like me or girls at all. I won't think of you differently either way, but I need you to be honest with yourself. You can't hide from who you are."

Shelby paused, her eyes brimming with tears.

"I don't know."
