World of Warcraft One Shot
A heavy hand pounded on the farmhouse door three times in quick unison, each time harder and fiercer than the last.
"My lord!" A stern voice called out from under the twilight sky that enveloped the Elwynn farmlands. "My lord please, come quick!" You peered from the window with half open eyes as Anduin swung his legs over the edge of the bed and wiped the crust from his eyes.
"What is the meaning of this!?" He leant from the window at the armour-clad rider who sat eagerly atop his nimble horse who lit up the field with the torch that he clutched tightly in his hand. "Go back to bed." He wrapped his arm around your waist and gently placed his lips onto your forehead.
"No, it's okay... I'll wait." You stared up at the moon as your eyelids fell heavier and heavier with each blink. "I'm fine, I promise." Anduin nodded understandingly, he reached over to his side and pulled a thick blanket from the floor and wrapped it over your shoulders.
"Your presence has been requested urgently Sire; an unknown attack has taken place in Stormwind. We don't know who, how or why but countless bodies litter the streets." Anduin ran his chilled fingers through his ever-growing hair and gently closed the shutters.
"I told them I wouldn't go back." He perched on the edge of the bed, his eyes darting back and forth as his head filled with an uncountable amount of options as the rider called for him from outside. "I left perfectly capable people to deal with situations like these."
"You can't leave us, it's too dangerous. As long as... whoever these attackers are don't learn of your whereabouts you'll be safe."
"Until the identity of the murderers are uncovered we aren't safe, nowhere near it. There's no choice." With regret already brimming from within his eyes he got dressed as appropriately as he could and made his way into the cold and around the back of the house.
"It isn't too late Anduin. You told them when you left that you weren't returning. As far as everybody knows you aren't the King anymore. Nobody would think any less of you if you didn't leave."
"It isn't about that." He knelt in the chilling, moist soil and dug his fingers into the earth, clawing away until his fingertips clashed against the dark wooden box that he thought would have stayed forever buried. He pulled the chest from the mud and ran his hands across the brass bindings, unclasping them as he went. "These are still my people, or at least they were. What kind of a person would I be if I let them run havoc through my kingdoms?" Trembling fingers wrapped around the leather wrapped handle of the blade passed down from father to son.
"Let me come with you then."
